Well while you're judging people on an individual basis, you're also using a universal blank template for every American, and a different one for every Brit, and so on. That's not realistic. No two born and raised americans are going to turn out the same, nor do they come from the same background.

Please elaborate on these "same stupid ideas and ideals that have plagued us for a couple centuries". learning languages and history/culture? I'm not sure where the double standard is to expect people to learn the language of their ancestors. I'd advocate the same for a Norweigan living in the US, or an Italian, or a Kenyan. There is literally no downside to learning your ethnic language, and if someone chooses to remain willfully uneducated, that speaks plenty enough.
Well if somebody wants to learn an ancestral language I have no issue with that. But my point is those that chose not to shouldn't be looked down on either.

2 of my three sons don't speak their mother's native language. I don't have an issue with it. I think it was a missed opportunity but I don't think of them less than the oldest.

The ideas I'm speaking of are clinging too strongly to ancestral backgrounds as Americans. I believe it helps maintain division over unity in multiple ways.

Yes if it was up to me I'd drop all the lables. We'd all just be called Americans plain and simple.

ah i see. I completely agree with your 3rd & 4th points btw, I didn't mean to imply that American's should be labeled by their ethnicitys. My initial statement lol'ing @ her not being able to speak her own language was really only elicited because of her statements in the article saying how proud she is to be of Asian heritage...doesn't really make sense how someone could be proud of their ethnicity if they don't know the language or haven't traveled there much if at all. think it was just a misunderstanding between us regarding the context of my statement regarding learning native languages.
