Traditionally they say four months salary. I personally think that's excessive.
I'd much prefer a down for a house.

We're both from broken homes, that might have something to do with it.

We already decided not to have kids. She got her name legally changed to my last name about 4 years ago. Two of her siblings are homosexuals and in Oz, homos are not allowed to get married.

And she's not close to her parents. I guess all these factors might have something to do with it. If she wants to get married down the track, I guess I might think about it.

Part of it is defined by social standard.

As for a nice ring. There is a difference between EXPECTING and Liking/appreciating something. My wife didn't expect it, but she likes it. She doesn't wear it daily, doesn't wear makeup daily, etc. only wears it when we go out to dinner, events, special occasions etc.

My dad bought a ring for my mom that's worthy around 100k now if not more. Well she had a wedding ring, and he got this hand cut antique diamond that she wears now as an investment because he got it for a good deal.
I think he paid like 65-70k for it

i got engaged 5 years ago when I was making less money. i spent about $7k on the ring.

If i were to get engaged now, I probably would spend closer to $12-$14k. My wife loves her ring, but to get exactly what I wanted to get for her, would have cost much more.

The way I Think about it, is it's something that she wears every day of her life. I want her to have something that she loves wearing and showing off.

At the end of the day, I spent that much because I can afford it. If your budget is $1000 then thats cool too.

Spent around $150 for my wifes engagement that I found online at a little antique shop in Germany...had it shipped to me for cheap. Our wedding rings are 14k white gold that I got from a place in Hawaii because I loved the pattern and they only cost around $350 shipped back in '01. We did eventually replace the sapphire main stone of her engagement ring with a diamond which was double the cost of the original ring lol.

I've spent 10k on my fiance's engagement ring. That's about 1.5mo of my salary after tax. I have 0 regrets because I knew she would def return to me something back.

She got me watch worth 8k, and she's paying way more share of the wedding expenses (almost 2 to 1 ish ratio).

Although, I almost flipped when she told me she wants wedding band from Tiffany&Co and I should get it there too. I just want a $300 wedding band fml.
