The only thing I can say about OP's argument is that it is a cultural thing, and deeper than that would be a racial thing. I get it. Most true guitar players, drummers, bass players (instruments in general) would listen to something like BackStreet Boys, Jay Z, Justin Bieber, whatever, and cringe. It lacks substance. Where are the key changes, the time signature differentials, the layered instrumentation played by real musicians? It's like most of it is made by the push of a button. I fall into this category. It's not real music because it lacks real vision. It takes less talent to do, but it is somehow extremely popular. Probably because it plays to the lowest common intellectual denominator (no hate, OP, it is what it is). It evokes joy to these people because it is... simple.

Alternatively, to someone who is into that type of stuff mentioned above, instrumentation, with varied vocals, and complex time signatures with screaming guitar riffs hurts their ears. You have to have an appreciation of the music you're listening to before you can enjoy it. That sounds cliche' but true. I used to listen to Bone Thugs N Harmony. They had some talent, albeit it as far as I knew it wasn't with an instrument other than their words. I love, love, love Chuck Berry, Percy Sledge, Otis Reddin

Don't want to turn this into a race thread, but it'll eventually devolve into that, anyway.

But holy ****, I have never realized how utterly joyless, depressing, soul sucking, pretentious, rock music really is. Specifically, classic rock music.

Been working at a new company for about a year and a half now, and they literally play classic rock 90% of the time, so I have a good amount of listening/observation.

In that time, I have concluded that this is the reason why white people are so ****ing depressed/emo/shooting up school/resort to drugs, despite the fact that they come from first world countries.

They listen to this joyless, rhythm-less, beat-less, garbage. Everything from Led Zepplin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Fleetwood Mack, Bruce Springsteen, Ozzie Osborne, even when these artists are making supposedly "happy" music, it comes off soul-suckingly depressing, because you know deep down these artists were all sad, pathetic, drug addicted fiends that had to depend on substances to "motivate" themselves to be happy.

An entire generation being raised on this kind of music truly does a number on the psyche.

I honestly don't mean this to be a race thing, but an Asian, I GET why western music genres like EDM, Rap, Hip Hop, Pop, Country (yes, even that), are extremely popular.

They all have something in common: no matter the lyrical content, the MUSIC itself is joyful. This means it makes you want to dance, boogie, bop your head, move your feet in a JOYFUL manner. It has rhythm and soul, it inspires you to be happy through SOUND (NOT LYRIC).

When I'm working, no matter how chitty of a mood I'm in, if, say a Backstreet Boy song, a Chris Brown song, a Chainsmoker Song, these music can lift me up and make me want to dance, send me into a different zone completely.

But with rock music, it somehow just further enhances the chitty mood, or sends you spiraling down to even deeper depression.

I honestly have a few reasons as to why this is so, but I won't get into that yet.

--rock music is inherently rhythm-less, therefore it does not invoke joy/dancing
--rock music, in its simplest form, is just rthymless, joyless, technical sound that has no soul or passion.

As someone who appreciates all types of music. I would like to add my two cents on the subject.

I would like to start off saying I love dancing. I am white, married and full of joy. I love weddings because it means I will get to spend that night dancing with my wife to ALL types of different dance music.

There is a time and a place for everything! Music included. Maybe classic rock at work is a horrible mix for your personality type, and that is ok. It doesn't however give you the right to be racially charged and angry at people who enjoy the music.

Rock' n Roll has so many sub genres that labeling all of them as soulless, sad and depressing is ignorant and short sighted. I grew up in a local music scene in my early teens and all the way into early adulthood. The experiences I had at various live music venues, music festivals, touring and all that comes with that time of my life helped define who I am.

In fact I would say due to the exposure I had as a child I was sad angry and depressed until I found rock/metal/punk/hardcore music as an outlet and a way to express myself. Finding so many like minded people was uplifting and empowering. Creating music with some of my best friends was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. My band mates weren't people I had just met or found on a Craigslist add. These were guys I grew up with during this time in my life. We looked out for each other, fought for each other and due to the badass, free flowing all American nature of our lifestyle; we often times ****ed the same women(no not at the same time angry wizard).

My life today is amazing, I am a chef and a father of 5. I have a beautiful and financially successful wife and I use angry (sounding) music as motivation when I workout. I literally have no reason to be angry anymore, so hardcore music's only real purpose in my life today is for adrenaline in the gym. But rock music in general? Man so much to be said for the genre. Even instrumental guitar can be soothing while I cook breakfast for my children in the morning. Or listening to good old fashioned "good ol boy" southern rock to lift my spirits at work.

Dance music is great man. It has its place, but could you really listen to sugary music for every situation in your life? If the only time you need music is when you are partying I will say "ok great!". But don't be angry at the rest of us who enjoy variety.
