There seems to be a lot of similarities between a lot of religions. Maybe this is because of Carl Jung's "Collective Conscious"? Because there are a lot of similarities it's best to take those similar principles as universal principles in my opinion. Those are the universal principles to abide by. I guess it's also like how a lot of different religions from different cultures have a lot of similar stories to them like the creation of man or a "Jesus figure" or the apocalypse etc. I'm not saying aliens. I'm just saying there are universal ideas. A lot of books/movies/tv shows take a lot from each other. An idea can present itself in a different culture or time period but at the same time present itself elsewhere. It's just interesting to me.

Perfect timing proudmanlet!

If anything this philosophy teaches is to not allow emotions to impair judgement and to exercise resilience while going through the struggles in life. Certainly every young man should learn about even if they don't apply everything in it.

One occurred back in 3rd century BC and Transcendentalism was muchhhhh later.

Also they really arn't the same.

-Stoicism is more about enjoying life for what it is and not get wrapped up in hedonism. To me, it is about transcending society and enjoying life for what it is.
-Transcendentalism is a shift towards subjective-ness and individualism. That you really don't need anyone, any societal/personal influences and are best on your own.

I see where you think that though. But Stoicism really doesn't think you need to be outside of society and its influences. More that society often brings hedonism, which should be avoided.

Say to yourself in the early morning: I shall meet today ungrateful, violent, treacherous, envious, uncharitable men. All of these things have come upon them through ignorance of real good and ill... We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.

“If combat had taught me anything, it taught me what was essential in life and what wasn’t. In my prayers before D-Day, I had always thanked God for what He had done for the world in general and asked that others would be given a break in the future. I had also thanked Him for a lot of things that I now found to be insignificant. The only thing I asked for now was to be alive tomorrow morning and to survive another day. That was all that mattered–that was the only thing as far as wanting anything for myself. All other things had become extra, nonessential, and I could not be bothered or burdened with nonessentials.”-Major Dick Winters(Commander of Easy Company aka Band of Brothers)

r u aware the stoics even talked about LIFTING/exercise/fitness?

Now there are short and simple exercises which tire the body rapidly, and so save our time; and time is something of which we ought to keep strict account. These exercises are running, brandishing weights, and jumping…But whatever you do, come back quickly from body to mind. – Seneca, Epistle 15 [2]

Suppose, for example, that in talking to an athlete, I said, “Show me your shoulders,” and then he answered, “Look at my jumping weights.” Go to, you and your jumping weights! What I want to see is the effect of the jumping weights. – Epictetus, Discourses, I, 4 [1]

And if you form the habit of taking such exercises, you will see what mighty shoulders you develop, what sinews, what vigour…. – Epictetus, Discourses, II, 19 [3]

this is a good article about "the stoic workout":http://modernstoicism.com/show-me-yo...stoic-workout/

good quote from the article:
So how might the cardinal virtues relate to training the body?

Fortitude provides the capacity to endure hard things for worthwhile goals, making it a most fitting virtue to assist those who would endure the physical pain and discomfort involved in performing both high intensity strength training and demanding endurance training. And indeed, as Musonius has noted, when we train our bodies to endure hardships, we also train the soul.

Temperance, applies most directly to the self-control involved in following the proper kind of diet that will sustain our training efforts, preserve our health, and preserve us from the kind of gluttony that distracts and weakens the soul.

Justice involves giving each person his or her rightful due, and in the realm of fitness, this might involve showing our concern by providing advice and examples of healthy living for all those around us, perhaps with special attention to the unique fitness goals and training needs of members of various groups of people, like the young, women, and the elderly.

Prudence is the virtue that gets the job done, finding the right means to obtain the worthwhile ends of bodily strength and fitness, in a safe and efficient manner that leaves us with plenty of time and energy to focus on the things of the soul that matter the most.

One of the most underrated quotes in all of history

“Show me your jumping weights. Go to, you and your jumping weights! What I want to see is the effect of the jumping weights.(no homo)". – Epictetus

Not technically Stoicism, but Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy has kind of caught my attention.
The Consolation of Philosophy was written in AD 523 during a one-year imprisonment Boethius served while awaiting trial – and eventual execution – for the alleged crime of treason under the Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great. Boethius was at the very heights of power in Rome and was brought down by treachery. This experience inspired the text, which reflects on how evil can exist in a world governed by God (the problem of theodicy), and how happiness is still attainable amidst fickle fortune, while also considering the nature of happiness and God. It has been described as "by far the most interesting example of prison literature the world has ever seen."

Looks less straight to the point and more poetic than the Stoic's stuff though.

Day off today and I'm sitting here reading "On the Shortness of Life." Will post more later but I enjoyed this quote, talking about a person who had experienced good things and bad, but remained in control of himself:

"Will always enjoy freedom which is solid and complete, at liberty to be his own master and higher than all others. For what can be above the man who is above fortune?"

On The Shortness of Life was a great read. It's CRAZY short, you can easily read it in a sitting. But it's good Stoic philosophy, which means I'll go back and re-read it again and again.

I underlined something on every single page.

Here is a reading of it on YouTube in a modern translation. I recommend a hard copy so you can underline/take notes, but it's nice to have a copy to listen back to on the go.

From the links in your OP - the first three books - which would you recommend for a newb like myself? I'd like to explore more.

Not sure on OP books since no experience with them but if you are a newb and looking for information into Stoicism and philosophy in general, would highly recommend The Dream of Reason:https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Reason-.../dp/039332365X

Good intro into philosophy and all the thought processes of the big philosophers including a lot of Stoics.

Have also read Marcus' meditations also which is a great read on Marcus and his Stoicism:http://classics.mit.edu/Antoninus/meditations.html
