The Shawshank Redemption is overrated. I mean, I liked it, but there's no way it's in the top ten movies ever made. Same deal with Fight Club.

I agree with some of the movie mentions. But wonder what effect expectations have on some of your answers.
Example- I think Scarface is a good movie. Nothing more or less.
But For the longest time I heard people talk about how good it was, mostly every rapper but regular people too.

When I'm trying to get someone I know into one of my shows or movies I will give them a brief synopsis on it, strongly emphasize they should watch it and tell them it's currently my favorite. And I stop there. When I hear people say "omg it will change your life it's the greatest show ever!" I cringe because I know that expectation is going to be hard to meet.
Some of my favorite shows and movies I actually did not want to watch.
Did not want to watch 40yo virgin because I thought it looked dumb. Ended up loving it.
Did not want to watch walking dead because I'm into the zombie thing but I love that show.

A lot of classics I don't like, I can't think of any offhand where I just don't get it at all...

But Eisenstein's sound movies (like Alexander Nevsky) are half bad, and Welles and Herzog nailed Godard.

Actually I remember one: Amer. F*ck Amer. And Tae Guk Gi.

Blade Runner, based on PK Dic k novel (he is one of the SF GOATs), only thing I didnt like was Ridley Scotts take on Deckard being a replicant or not (was opposite of PKD). But I have adpated 2 PKD stories myself, and the guy's writing has great depth. Blade Runner captured a lot of the complexity of the novel. Not easy to do.

The story was pretty boring in my opinion and I don't see why this movie is such a big deal. The techniques they used and how they shot the film was amazing and revolutionary, but when it comes to the movie itself, it wasn't that great in my opinion.

Was going to reply this to the same comment. I've seen N X NW many times. Would watch again if I happened to have the opportunity to see it on a big screen. I like Rear Window too, Vertigo not as much.

Guess I need to see Lawrence of Arabia.

Mostly agree otherwise (over rated) except I really like The Sound of Music. Admit I may be biased though because I like a lot of old musicals and we used to watch it every year...actually have it on Blu-ray.

Exorcist really is hilarious if you go back and watch it. The spinning head and puking.... LOL i got a serious , hardly laugh !!!

an overrated Modern "classic" is District 9 . That was CRINGY basically after the 1st 20 minutes. super cool concept, hated the execution and characters.

The Godfather outside of Marlon Brando/Al Pacino scenes srs. Quite boring to watch.

Star Wars Series as a whole, personally I think 5 is the only masterpiece of the group and 3 was the only other above average movie.

Full Metal Jacket, movie was chit after basic training.

Nolan North's Batman series as a whole, 1st one was a generic rise of a hero. 2nd one was great but Ledgers death made it more popular than it should of been. 3rd was cringe inducing.

One I can understand is There Will Be Blood, a lot of hidden meaning and requires at least 2 watches plus a lot of thinking. Personally its one of greatest films put out there and Lewis was out of this world with his acting.

I can't evaluate Avatar on a real level. The timing of a good 3D movie was perfect, as there hadn't been one to that point...at least not on that level. And the time of year and the people I saw it with added to the experience. I'm sure if I saw it under different circumstances I wouldn't like it. Sometimes timing is everything in life. And the timing of Avatar was perfect for me.

Pulp Fiction might be one of those movies that you needed to experience back when it first came out or shortly after. It "set the table" for movies that came after it. So if you are younger and try to go BACK and see the movie, I'm sure it falls short.

You boyos are too young to remember the hype around Clockwork Orange, but it was the most disappointing movie based on hype that I've ever seen. It was unwatchable.
