Because if they start lifting they'll get really huge like Arnold and they don't want to get too big srs

Makes me die a bit inside everytime a girl says that. Just makes me want to shoot myself. If it was that easy to get huge why am I still DYEL status?

I honestly don't think the laziness percentage of females is much different from males. The reason more men lift is prob cause if a guy wants to lift, most just go to the gym and aren't too worried about feeling intimidated and of course they want big muscles. For females it's different. There's intimidation and the fear of getting huge muscles.

If you don't think a male noob / or out of condition lifter feeels intimidated entering the weight room for the first time ..you're mistaken ..it's probably worse

Maybe I am. I just think there's def more that goes into females not lifting than men not lifting. At my gym, it's full of guys of all different shapes lifting vs maybe 3-4 women of all different shapes actually lifting. The women in my gym are mostly on the cardio machines or in the classes. Not in the weight sections.

Classes get a bad rap, but some of that yoga/Pilates stuff is legit. There's this lady in my Pilates class with ripped biceps, shoulders, and abs--she doesn't lift. Must be from all that bodyweight exercise. Chaturangas are basically slo-mo pushups.

Is the fear of women getting big muscle still a thing? I thought that was old news

I'm def not knocking classes. Just saying that it's prob more comfortable for a lot of women to go into a class with mostly other women, than into the weight sections of a gym.

Yes, it's absolutely a thing. I talk to so many girls that are afraid of weight lifting because they think they'll get big.

I think especially so for women, since it's legit hard for us to master bodyweight exercises and they provide a lot more stress for us. I mean, most women can barely DO a pushup, so why does it make sense to lift before mastering that?

I also agree that body weight exercises work great. For 3 months after my shoulder surgery all I could do was bodyweight legs. I hit them hard and did tons of reps, like 100's of squats in every variation and walking lunges, etc. My legs stayed right on from where they were before by just doing bodyweight.

I mean it's easier to do 15lbs dumbell press than doing a full ROM pushup (non knee). Especially if strength is the issue

Hey, talking about bodyweight for legs... I got pretty durn good leg development simply from sprinting when I was younger. I think if you can run fast with good form, master pushups, and do a pullup as a female, you're in top-1% shape. I'm actually still not at the point where I can even do a pullup, so that's my current goal and then I plan to do a lot more BW stuff and less actual barbell things.

on-topic I was the same way when I first started, but quickly realized nobody gives a fuk about you at the gym. I still regularly see overweight women and the like walk in and give me dirty looks like they think I'm going to say something.

This. A lot of women got totally wrong perceptions about lifting. They seem to think going to the gym will magically turn them into the Ingredible Hulk.

It's getting better with the Instasloot culture, but it still does not work that way.

You lost me at running. lol

My goal is to do pull ups too. Are you using the assisted pull up machine? I've gotten to were I can do 1 or 2 at 50 lbs and I think that's my PR so far. Then I do with a higher weight assist for tons of reps.

Some of us put on more bulk than we'd like though due to genetic predisposition..it's exacerbated by need to keep body fat at a certain level if you have specific aesthetic goals that include retaining some boobs

So while it would never be easy to gain like a man..it can for some of us be tough as anything to strike a balance between the right amount of muscle and body fat

As guys you'd never feel too big ..as women you can

And it's worse if you genuinely love lifting

Last time I changed my avatar was cos I liked my post gym pump on my arms but tbh if they looked like that all the time it wouldn't fit my ideal

So yep it's a thing

No, I use bands, as I feel like they're a closer simulation of a real pullup. I also work with different grips: pronated, neutral, supinated. I can do neutral grip chins and regular chinups now, but not pullups, feelsbadwomane. I think higher reps at a weight that won't put you at failure is a good idea, from what I've heard. Doing other exercises like variations on lat pulldowns helps, too, as does increasing core strength with planks, bird dogs, etc., and increasing lat strength in other ways like bent over rows.

Running is GOAT, no one will convince me otherwise. IF you're good/fast enough and have good form, it is a true full-body exercise.

ETA OH also doing flexed arm hangs from a bar and things like scapula retractions while in dead hang seems to help.

Yep, I do lat pulldowns and bent over DB rows as well. Also I've heard doing lots of push ups help.

lol I totally admire you runners. I just hate it and my knees won't let me do it for any distance, so I do intervals.

That's fair, knee problems are a b*tch. Cycling is legit, though, and so is swimming. I swam while I had a hip injury and retained basically all my cardio plus built my lats. Doing HARD single lengths of the pool was INTENSE.

TFW no access to a pool. I haven't done laps since my early teens on swim team. lol I do some cardio on treadmill, plus Salsa. Thankfully when I'm lifting, I don't need much cardio.

My desire to not be an almost 300 lbs over six foot behemoth kept me from being too insecure. AT the end of the day I Realized if someone was being mean because I was trying to better myself they're the real fool not me.

I hear the stories of people making fun of others at the gym and I just can't believe people do that. I always admire anyone going to the gym and showing up to work on themselves. It's BS to look down on or make fun of anyone there.

I can easily count on one hand the amount of women I've actually seen lift heavy and push themselves out of their comfort zones. I've never seen a female do a push up, a chin up or pull up in my gym ever.

I don't want get too big or build too much muscle = I don't want to have to work hard.

When you're walking around with a purse and a kid on your hip that weighs 20+ lbs but you're doing flys with 15 lbs...you can easily go heavier.
