I'm not even required to dress nice. Clean pants, collard shirt, "nice" shoes is pretty much the only requirement but I still wear slacks, polished dress shoes and button up shirt (no tie) 85% of the time to work. Just like putting on nice clothes in the morning and I've never been a fan of jeans. I own 2 pairs that I wear maybe once a month.
hard to hate on a fellow wings fan but....

i need to cut... badly.

If you want me to wear a suit, you better buy me a bespoke suit.

Agree. 50K a year here and wear jeans and a t shirt if I want. No I’m not a tradie, I actually do work a corporate position.

My ex went and got a job at Enterprise rent-a-car as a management trainee after college. She had to wear business attire to clean out cars in the rain for like 14 bucks an hour. I felt bad for her.

My theory on dress codes is that companies over state them, in order to prevent people who seem to think sagging your pants with a tucked in button down is an acceptable look etc. Looking clean and neat is a harder feat to pull off with casual clothes because tastes are so varied.

I'm business casual AF at my bank, I'm in tech and I'm currently wearing a button down jeans and timberlands lol.

Also I think as the old farts who run companies die off and retire dress codes around the country become more laxed... banking is a perfect industry where you can see this, Most tellers used to be in a shirt and tie and more and more banks are letting polo/chinos be acceptable than say even 10 years ago.

Spot on with old farts. This applies to so much more too (politics especially). Brb 1000 year old bob dictating laws and policies for a group he is completely out of touch with. Just lol

Suit jacket and tie is over dressing for 90% of offices... but you can't be rocking up in a t-shirt. Gotta draw the line somewhere and wearing dress shirt with slacks is not uncomfortable. Otherwise IT officecells will be slobbing around the workplace in hoodies and stained trackpants.

But then again I wear a uniform so this doesn't apply to me

Although I agree w your general sentiment, there are many more professions that require biz casual at a minimum. Professional services like finance, accounting. Corporate at an actual corporation (even “lowly” fdlp type stuff). I’m in IB in nyc and pretty much every schmo walking down the street is wearing biz casual or a suit. Just a culture thing

I disagree about this if the job pays under 100k but is prestigious. Lots of high level government jobs(CIA, State Department, Senate staff etc) make under 100k, but they have WAY WAY more influence and prestige then some IT schmuck making 160k wearing shorts and sandals to work everyday.

But for the most part OP is right. If you are not paying your employees over 100k ish all in, you are being unreasonable to expect them to come into work everyday with a full suit.

Yes. One of two cases. Either your finance (Wall Street not some broke ass teller) / corporate legal types who make multiples of 100k per year.

Or a typical professional job with a terrible culture that enforces it

Dude above me also mentioned government work, forgot about that
