EDIT: The distance is somewhere about 1.5 miles so that's highly unlikely even for an experienced diver.
No, not take off the scuba tank to where you aren't breathing O2 but moving the tank behind you or in front of you while still using the oxygen regulator.

There were cave spots I was diving in where the tank would scrape on the walls so you'd take your tank off and swim with it directly in front of you in order to make yourself skinny and able to fit. Definitely freaky because your entire existence is sitting in your hands in front of you and you don't want to drop your tank because there goes your air.

Kids wouldn’t even need to do that. They could free swim with a long regulator hose. The pros could carry the tank.

I’ve scubad before where the tank floats on the surface. The air line was like 20ft long.

Kids not being able to swim would be the problem

Couldn't they just feed a rope/cable through the passages? Don't have to swim to be able to grab the rope and pull yourself through. Maybe the passage way is too narrow.

After seeing this a while back i looked into that story quite a bit. Some kid got stuck in the same passage where he did, but not as far in. He was 140 pounds, 5'7 and still experienced nerve damage due to how he was stuck. John Jones was 200 pounds and 5'11. Situational awareness not even once.

Hmm, with fins it seems like it wouldn't be that much of a problem. Just have them follow the ceiling of the cave. Put their flotation devices on to max and they'll always stay right at the top of the cave.

How can we land a man on the moon but we can't figure out a way to extract them safely? Have other governments asked for assistance or offered help?

Read the article. Pumps have already been deployed. Drilling is being considered but deemed not feasible at the moment.

As for swimming out, the technical logistics of the escape are not the problem here.

These are teenagers who can't swim, who have no diving experience, but above all else, who haven't had any sleep or anything to eat or drink for close to two weeks. And we aren't talking about a short 100 meter trek, we are talking about a two mile swim through a pitch-black obstacle course that took highly experienced, highly trained, well-fed and well-rested men who do operations like this for a livingsix hoursto navigate. No amount of scuba gear, air lines and tow lines will ensure these severely emaciated children will survive the swim given how arduous it is.

FFS, most people on this site can barely get off the toilet after leg day.

-Use experienced divers to go in and feed a cable through to act as a guidance system for the kids, so they wouldn't even have to swim, just pull themselves on the cable.
-divers will stage a bunch of 02 tanks along the cable near the choke points, so that if tanks need to be ditched they can get new ones.
-stage and rotate experienced divers at multiple points throughout the cave to act as assistants to help the kids move in the right direction. It'll be like passing a baton, once the assistant gets the kid to the next diver that diver then goes along with the kid until the next 'checkpoint'.
-use underwater tools to help widen some of the extra tight/tricky areas (idk if something like this exists or is even possible)
-Thai speaking dive instructor will obviously have to go in prior to this and give a crash course class and special 1 on 1 attention will have to be given to each kid to ensure they're semi-competent.
-Do this 1 kid at a time, this will take longer but will ensure chaos doesn't ensue and emergencies can be better managed.

What am I missing, boyos? Let's crowdsource a solution. Let's critique what we've got and come up with the ultimate plan to save these kids.

I like where you're going but holy fack does that sound overly complicated like planning a space shuttle launch, especially since you're dealing with 9-14 year olds who can't even swim having to wade through several miles of black water. Something like what you just outlined would need to be planned out to the tee, one mistake or misfire and someone is drowning. I just feel there has to be some simple, obvious solution. Hopefully, some very smart people are going to figure this out.

They would already people that would be specialized in situations like this. They most likely are using mine rescue people to figure out the logistics since they would have training in getting people trapped underground. This isnt a military situation and if the military were ever in a situation where they need to get people trapped underground they would just bring in mine rescue.
I have a feeling they are just gonna send a bunch of divers over to get them out. Especially if any of them get really sick where they wont last if they stay down there. At that point basically just use that kid as a guinea pig. If it works they can keep going. If not well the kid most likely would have died anyways.
