Bro, that's just totally your opinion. One thing is certain though - you guys use it for attention and likes, basically to feel important. You aren't confident enough to not have it daily.

Depends on how you use it... I just look at memes and lifting things. Better than browsing reddit.

My personal findings in using Instagram recently to try and build business ventures:

Every girl is a clone. Just silly tarts sticking their arses out and showing their muscular quads. Is there some kind of filter they use for this because at my gym I never see this level of leg or butt development on 99% of the girls?

"clean eating" BS. Everyone posting pictures of salmon with green vegetables with the most ridiculously bright filters on everything. Honourable mention goes to all the douches male and female posting pics of their meal prepping which consists of rows of plastic pots with identical meals in them...always chicken, rice and green veg. I can feel the smugness in these posts, these people really thinking they are king dick.

There is no genuine interaction. Say you put a picture up, the comments are just from other companies or pages making a short generic comment, likely just a thumbs up emoji designed to help them get more followers.

It's definitely worsened my bout of depression and self esteem. I should be smart enough to see through this fake BS but it is easy to fall victim to just having it rammed in your face all these shredded roided chads and girls with huge perfect arses and tiny waists.

Edit: And how can I forget all the cliche motivational crap. I have actually gone right off The Rock because he is largely to blame for all this "hustle" BS. Hustle, side hustle, gring, be the hardest working guy in the room, you got this, go get it, get it ****ing done. What makes me rage at this stuff so much is that 99% of the people quoting it are useless lazy failures with no earning potential whatsoever. Never would they have the ability, drive or resources to start a business etc. I also fail to understand why being in shape qualifies to motivate anyone in any area outside of GETTING IN SHAPE. Silly tart sticking her squat butt out in skimpy leggings with a quote like "You can achieve all of your goals in life if you dare to brave your fears and reach for them". Johnny Douchebag with his 5%bf physique quoting some tired old money/success/happiness crap. Dude, you take steroids and live a life of misery eating unsatisfying bland foods and working out....you are in no way the bench mark for life success!

I don't use IG, but the issue surfaces with the women I date. At that point it starts to directly impact me when I'm in a relationship (or even dating) a woman that's using it. Couple of examples:
- Comparing life (even subconsciously) to those girls on IG that are showing off and competing with one another "oh look what my bf bought me" etc.
- Girl I'm dating as we're out exploring etc., and she feels the need to constantly take stories, caption them and apply some filter (ruining RL experiences).

I think most women areliterallyaddicted to it, and it's unhealthy. They'll go ahead and agree with me, but still can't help themselves from getting sucked in - it's a drug to them. The dopamine hits from attention/likes has been studied too.

If I was married and my wife wasn't into that ****e, then I could give zero fuks. But unfortunately I have to deal with it.

Yeah itโ€™s definitely a fact that some people let it affect them like that. Any platform can have a negative influence if you let it. For example way too many guys on the Misc let the women hate get to them and affect them IRL

bruh i have been wondering women's fascination with "good". the entirety of their template for life really seems to hinder on these feelings of "good"

now, supposedly this is the right thing - maybe? - or perhaps its just descriptor to explain how we already behave. but i guess within evolutionary psychology there is an explanation that someone who looks good, makes them feel good and in turn this is the attraction. i dont know

now, i guess i understand why people would choose good over bad, or, rather, things that feel good over bad.

but i dont understand why certain things feel good and certain things feel bad.

but i guess i wanted to comment on your statement about women being obsessed with social media. i would go beyond that and envelope women have this obsesssion with things that make them feel good. as you described the dopamine rush.

i guess you could broaden that and envelope humans, but i do think that women have this obsession more.

just a comment i guess

If by paradise you mean compliments mixed amongst a heavy amount of spam comments and most people only commenting to lure people to their own pages. The slooty girls thrive there when it comes to attention. Only very top tier males would get anything remotely similar.

I see any platform as just a tool that can be used constructively or not. In theory.

However I also acknowledge that we, as human animals, are psychologically predisposed to certain behaviors, and those can be exploited. There's a reason a lot of people even describe their own social media usage as a waste of time, but yet they continue to do it.

You and I might be aware of those predispositions, and thus avert them. But I don't think a lot of people in general understand it, or maybe aren't intelligent enough to. It's interesting when you look at how engagement metrics work internally for companies like ********. They will tweak their algorithms to increase engagement, which in effect is 'hooking' on evolved psychological mechanisms in the brain (dopamine hits).

Alcohol is a good analogy. Someone, like myself, may drink on occasion and gain a net benefit from it. Someone else may repeatedly engage in it until it's destructive. Imagine alcohol companies were tweaking their recipe to fire just the right amount of dopamine at the right times to keep you engaged.

I genuinely do believe that in the near future we'll have a very different perception of these platforms (akin to perception of drugs), and how destructive to our lives and mental health they can be.

That's true, I'm not absolving personal responsibility. That is king. But I think we generally acknowledge the dangers of eating poor quality food as a society, and we aren't quite there yet with social media engagement.

Yet the majority eats poor quality food anyways

same will happen with social media even after the data is presented to the masses

Forums are online mediums for discussion and conversation, which is vastly different from sites like Instagram.

Do you guys know each other in real life? You seem to white knight each other often.

You can't even have a serious discussion without making it personal brah! You need to calm down! And it's nothing to do with white knighting it's just seeing sanctimoniousness and holier than thou attitude whilst being completely hypocritical that encourages this "discussion" every time

Where did you get your definition for forums from, Merriam Webster? Let's be honest forums are about attention and validation as much as it is for "discussion and conversation"...the misc isn't exactly renowned for that and it's not really why any of us are here. And the rep system is used for validation as much as "likes" are. I'm sorry brah but the misc is as bad as the social media you hate in the same ways boyo.

Are you mad yet???

yeah the ads are getting a bit too much, going the same route as FB did

I think IG should implement that same feature snapchat has where it looks around the area you are and reveals what friends are nearby ... that'd be sick

It's cancer if you are enough of a ******* to follow cancerous people. Think about that op...

I only follow chit I am interested in, with a handful of friends sprinkled in. Jiu jitsu, surfing, lulz, bands, tattoos, animals... Don't see a bit of cancer in that chit

I remember this summer when studying for the DAT and a lot of my friends were gone on internships or something, I started to worry about my "image" on social media for the first time. Don't know why, but I started to think, are my pictures good enough? Do I have enough of them? Do they make me look like somebody who's popular, who's fun, who has friends? Do I have enough vacation pics? What about my timeline posts, I should definitely cut out the ones that don't have enough likes or are pics of me when I had a bad haircut. Why did my profile picture change get fewer likes than this dude with less friends? etc...

Just on and on and on and on. I know that's pathetic and maybe not typical but I just disabled the whole thing for a long time, almost never get on anymore. I've got a great life, gonna graduate tuition free top of my class, have interviews at top dental schools in the country, my professors like me, got a wonderful family and plenty of friends I regularly see...... yet I was letting something as inconsequential as ******** make me insecure. I hated it. And I feel like instagram is an even worse version of this, of our need for approval.

Anyone who says they don't post on Instagram for validation/approval is LYING. That's literally all it's for. At least with other platforms they can be discussion based, but Instagram is literally to show pictures of yourself and your life, hoping for others to like it, and that's it. No wonder so many teenagers are frighteningly insecure these days, they think all of their peers have perfect bodies and perfect social lives.
