I am mirin unbelievably hard. I love the way the land is out in South Dakota.

How's the cost of living out in a place like that? Is it feasible for someone to buy a smaller personal chunk of land even if they aren't going to go full-scale farm? I'm looking to buy a place in the next year or two and work remotely... Would love the seclusion and fresh air out there

Cost of living where I’m at is ridiculously low, like $12 an hour is considered a good job by most standards. It’s gets higher around the Black Hills but it’s getting touristy.

How big is a “small chunk” of land to you?

Honestly I don't have a very good mental image of how big different acreages are.



I'd be more than happy with what you can see in this pic ^^^ from you to the far side of the body of water in a radius around where the photo was taken. Ideally I'd want a large field with a few groups of trees, and a small river running through it.

The area I stayed at before was around the Black Hills but I just love the wide open geography and swear the air was 10x fresher.

I’d ball park the land you describe in that pic as probably 320 acres or so which would be more than enough for most people.

True story about the fresh air. About 10 years ago I had a father and son from Rhode Island come out during the spring to hang out on the ranch. After a full day horse back the father fell ill from what he described as too much fresh air. He went back to his hotel room, smoked a half a pack of cigarettes, got his room all smoky and he felt fine that evening. Aside from being a smoker he seemed to be a pretty in shape guy otherwise but he apparently was getting an oxygen over load or something.

Not surprised, it's a complete different experience compared to being within a city.

The Badlands being adjacent to your property is major icing on the cake. Not going to lie, incredibly jealous. It's like walking around on an alien planet in there

The winters can get long but it’s just something a guy gets used to. A ranch pickup like mine with tire chains all the way around can get me to the Livestock in all but the worst days and if I need to I can just plow the snow with either the tractor or the pay loader. Truth be told though with the rough country the cattle spend their winters in they weather storms plenty fine without my help.

Btw do those cows free roam and graze across many acres??? Do you ever get people trying to steal cattle or is that a cliche from Westerns?? If so do you have security or do you have to be vigilant?
