I remember my last flight. Istanbul to Montreal. I heard a loud noise a few minutes before the landing and the plane started shaking. I will never know what that noise was but I know it was not the landing gear.

I feel safer in older planes. They have been tested more. With new planes there's a chance it has some design flaws that only become known after crashes like this..

The plane had reported problems the night before on a flight from Denpasar to Jakarta, Lion Air's CEO Edward Sirait told local media TV1 in an interview. Sirait said engineers had checked and repaired the problem and reported that the plane was ready to fly.
Someone is getting fired/sued.

Yep. Aircraft apparently had a "technical issue" sunday night but was still cleared to fly. The safety standards just aren't as high in developing areas.


I actually have a pretty big fear of flying but have to fly once or twice a month. I am good once we are up in the air but after takeoff for a good 10 minutes I am usually a wreck. Was on a flight from NYC one time and the plane dropped 3000 feet or so without warning. Pilot said they were given a different altitude but I think another plane was probably headed toward us. What really got me was every woman on the plane screamed when it happened. That part was the worst. I remember I was actually really calm looking at the ground thinking "damn, I am about to die" hadn't felt that feeling in my life. Didn't fly for a couple years after that and was real freaked out when I finally did.

Isn't it fascinating that is one of the main differences between men and women - the uncontrollable scream. I guess there's an evolutionary reason we hate it so much.

Flying here in the US is still the safest way to travel. The maintenance plan on airplanes are some of the best in the world if not the best.

I have control over my safety in a car. I don't have control in an airplane. A lot of older jets have maintenance issues that I'm not informed of as a passenger. You don't often hear of car accidents killing 188 people at a time.

My issues with flying are:
- aging fleets of planes
- quality of maintenance work and records

- Homeland Security screening is invasive and steps on freedoms of innocent travelers in order to make a big show of keeping us safe, which in reality it doesn't
- ever shrinking seat space on planes and ever increasing fees for carry-on luggage, etc.
- spending long hours in proximity to cranky people

It's like going to the busiest DMV in the country on the busiest day of the year and being told the wait is 6 hours AND you have the possibility that the building may blow up with all of you inside.
1. The risk in car crashes is the other drivers/roadway conditions. Not your driving ability. You don't have the ability to control other drivers. Or if you get a blow-out at 80MPH.

2. Every time you hear about a commercial plane crash its some schitty third world plane/airline. When was the last time an American commercial plane crashed and lost its passengers?

3. The TSA process isn't really as 'invasive' as people make out. You literally put your items on a conveyer belt and walk through whats essentially a metal detector.

4. Customer service and people flying have never been an issue for me. I've never had an issue with 'cranky' people. Most are excited to travel.




Granted I take two 18hr trips per year and ride on around 6 different jets per year. Which likely isn't as much as some other people. But I haven't had any complaints or issues. What would take me three days to drive I can make in one day on a jet.

It kind of pisses me off, if a pilot is saying hey i need this, and they are experiencing it first hand (mind you with many hours under their belts), you'd try to make it a huge priority to make it happen.

Mind you - I'm not having a go at anyone, but I mean you'd assume a pilot knows best, and when he needs something, try to get it ASAP.

EDIT: Saw this update on this plane.
The flight made a request to air traffic control to return to the airport about 12 miles out from takeoff, but did not indicate there was any emergency, Yohanes Sirait, spokesman for AirNav Indonesia, the agency that oversees air traffic navigation, told CNN.
The spokesman added thatthe aircraft would have been given priority landing upon such a request, but that air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane shortly after. The plane had not turned back, according to the radar.

Edit 2:Authorities said they are still trying to locate the emergency locator transmitter, which is currently not transmitting.. Shi* =(

this plane crashed, copilot kept saying he's running out of fuel really calmly and never actually told atc its emergency. captain kept asking him if he actually told atc its emergency, he's like yea...controller informs him he's sending them 15 miles northest before turn for landing and asks him if its ok with their current fuel situation. The copilot replies "I guess so."....

Yes, but I can mitigate the results for most of those by driving a safe car, using a seat belt, avoiding driving in bad weather, etc. There are only a couple of scenarios where I have zero control and those are Final Destination scenarios.

With an airplane, I have zero control and my safety depends on a whole lot of people who are not on the flight. With a car accident, most of the time both drivers are actively trying to avoid a crash because both drivers would suffer the consequences.

A big part of my decision not to fly has to do with the outrageous way airlines treat their customers and how Homeland Security treats fliers in this post-9/11 world. I just refuse to be a part of that on principle. Most of the degrading situations (strip searched, strangers groping you, etc.) are for show anyway. It's absurd to pick people at random, rather than profiling for actual travelers who fit a terrorist profile, in the name of political correctness.

There has been a handful. The person that got sucked out of the Southwest window earlier this year was the first US carrier fatality in 10 years or so.

approx. 30,000 commercial flights per day in the US....for 10 years...is over 100,000,000 flights. And 1 fatality.

That is so insane. If you ever look at flight aware or a tracker like that, the sheer amount of planes in the air at any given time is astonishing. The fact that there are so few incidents is incredible.

I remember when I flew from LA to San Jose and we went through some clouds and water splashed me from outside and I thought RIP we gonna die. It dripped from the ceiling or something or idk.
