Ask the guy who owns the 7- 11.

Chances are he is not a billionaire but a regular guy with a ton of bills and responsibilities.

Why do you believe raising the minimum wage would help this issue and not further accelerate the rising cost of living?

Cost of literally everything has been increases while wages in most fields stagnating

Lower class can't afford a lot of basic **** anymore

Wage increases are hated on because everyone above the minimum wage thinks the people below don't deserve it. Ideally they should be demanding higher pay as well. Companies are making more money then ever. Any time we(engineers) try to bring up pay increases that are fixed, the response is well you guys are already paid way more then average.

The industry average is dog ****. I want everyone below me to make more money so I can go to my employer and say fuk you pay me more. Most people are stupid as fuk though.

The minimum wage increase may not directly help that issue, but it is a step in the right direction regardless. It's fukn bull****, the previous generation could work a 40k/yr job, have a house, stay at home wife and be comfortable. I'm making 6 figures and still feel like its insufficient.

Several reasons why

-Big business: will figure a way around it. 1)Go in any fast food restaurant and what do you see? Machines to order. And with smart phones you don't even have to go inside, you can order from the app. Raise minimum wage to $15/hr and McDonald's can simply fire all the cashier's and replace them with an app. They're really not needed. 2) They will cut hours and make everyone part time. Walmart raised minimum wage, but guess what? Also: Sam's club. They closed down numerous Sam's Clubs stores and that is just with a $1 raise, imagine if that jumps another $5. They also took away paid holidays and veterans no longer get extra pay on the weekend. 3) They'll raise the price of items sold and you'll have to pay more.

-Job types: These jobs were never meant for adults to raise families. They were never meant to pay the mortgage or car note. Go back to the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, were they doing the same? No. These places are for teens and college student. Why do teens need $15/hr to flip burgers?

-Small businesses : Corporations can afford minimum wage, but what makes you think a small business can? Most will fail and soon corporations will control more of the market

This is 99% of it. It's also the reason we'd rather continue getting ass blasted by the medical industry instead of having socialized care.

Some weird game theory - we choose sub-optimal outcomes to protect our fragile self images. Cripes.

So what do we do about the #1 welfare queen in the history of welfare - walmart? They pay below a living wage and taxpayers get to pick up the rest of the bill.

Why is it a step in the right direction if it may not even help the issue?

At my company with my trade we can’t afford to pay our new/green apprentices 16 bucks an hour ad then pay the journeyman 35.

Like I tell them they are blessed to be getting paid to go to school, beats going into debt for a useless degree.

Then you should be advocating against importing & outsourcing low wage labor. A higher minimum wage would do absolutely nothing in the long run.

It's not a living wage. Want to earn more, become more skilled and bring something to the table many other people don't.

Min wage is for people who don't possess any real skills or value, and you think they deserve more money? How about no?

Again, here are the options:

1) Their employer can pay for them to live, or

2) Their employer can pay sub-poverty wages and YOU can pay the rest

Realistically, those are your two options.

If we raised minimum wage to $100/hour, would that fix the problem? Less folks on welfare? Less unemployment? Less poverty.....? No one should be poor making that much, right? Problem Solved, Big Ern? Is that how things would work?

If the workers want a higher wage they should protest but I'm not in favor of forcing the government or forcing companies to raise the wage. Once you raise the wage there is no real way of going back and that can lead to inflation.

I prefer a free market. Also, when their employers are forced to pay them more, the cost of goods goes up and it will affect us all. For what? Because some no skill loser is too lazy to get educated or learn a valuable skill? No gracias, amigo.

I'm not even saying minimum wage will fix the problem. It's probably temporary relief, at best.

I'm only pointing out logical fallacy of licking these corporations' boots when they are robbing us blind every damn day by suppressing wages.

Good for you. So what happens to people that make a bit over $15/hr? Will they also get a pay bump when their lower paid colleagues start making $15/hr? What about when companies just fire people and get robots/machines to replace them?

Minimum wage increase is great, it gives companies a chance to raise prices, slash hours, reduce benefits, ect.

There's a surplus of low wage labor, partner. There's no business competition for unskilled workers. They're a dime a dozen. Until there's a demand, low wage workers will live a pretty "low wage" lifestyle regardless of where the minimum wage is set.
