From my experience, they take pride in being "emotionally tough," ie a way for them to put a positive spin on what is essentially poor communicators and verbally abusive by Western standards. Manipulation was definitely common as well.
Pretty sure you're well aware of how unhealthy your relationship is and that you need to end it or at the very least attend counselling together.
