they're likely going to be chalked up to a "call so many people 'cousin' " thing versus a "have so many cousins" thing.

From what I gathered white american families don’t have that “big family” mentality that a lot of other cultures do. Family is extremely important in asian, africans, South American’s, and some european cultures like italians and greeks.

When I was a kid the family reunion on just my moms side was about 200-300 people. Grandparents and their siblings. Their kids. etc. Essentially it would be 1st cousins to 4th cousins. We'd literally need to rent a event building to get together. On my dads side it was significantly smaller because it was literally just him and his siblings and their spouses/children. Parents, uncles, aunts, etc. all dead by the time my father was 16. Even then he originally had 7 siblings + their spouses and their 2-5 kids each.
Fast forward to 2019 and we haven't had a family reunion over 15 years. Maybe about 150 family members have died during that time period. The younger generation is spread across the country due to college + jobs. Etc. Without the older generation organizing/pulling everyone together people just kind of drift apart. Everyone is busy/caught up in their own lives.

The solutions to that are twofold:This. Im not going to expect my kids to take care of me because im not a ******* and will save enough for the retirement of my choosing so im not a burden. Lol at poeiple who never saved a dime and expect their kids to bail them out, poverty mindset of peace.
1. Build a decent retirement so I can afford better care for myself when I'm an oldcel - How many of these people who wind up either relying on their children or bottom-tier nursing homes to change their diapers and feed them when they're old bothered even trying to build a legitimate retirement for themselves? Some people genuinelly just get the shaft, and I feel for them. But I have no sympathy for people who spent their working lives buying extra luxury vehicles, boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles, huge fancy houses, etc. who wind up broke when they can't work anymore. You should be planning for retirement from the start of your career and consider it with every major purchase you make and whether or not that will screw you in the long run.
2. Taking care of your physical health in general - a lot of this has to do with the luck of genetics, but you should at least maximize your potential for good health as you age. *Most* people that live to be active and mostly self-sufficient into their 80's/90's took reasonably good care of themselves throughout their lives and weren't couch potatoes, bindge drinkers, smokers, addicts of other sorts, or eating junk food constantly. Sure you'll meet the occasional person who neglected their health for decades and still functioned decently into their 80's and the health/fitness conscious person whose genetics screwed them by the time they in their 60's, but those are the exceptions, not the rules. Take care of yourself when you're young, and there's a high probability it'll pay off as you age if you continue to do so. Then perhaps you'l still be able to wipe your own asss for an extra 10-20 years, if nothing else.
People talk about how their parents gave them everything so they refuse to put them in a nursing home, and it's a fair arguement. But as I see it, my kids don't entirely *owe* me taking care of me like a helpless toddler when I'm a washed up old fart, because it was ME who chose to have them, they had no say in the matter. Therefore I feel like I owe them everything, but am not expecting to kick back and bank on them for the exact same in return when I'm old, as I should be setting myself up now to not require much help from them.

They're content with slapping a bunch of stupid chit on social media and throwing a few "likes" out here and there and calling it good. So eventually I decided F that, if you're they're not going to put any effort into it than neither am I. It's kind of sad and not at all how I imagined it would be when we were kids, but that's just the way it goes.

it's no wonder why people no longer want to have kids. it's the logical conclusion of the 'every man for himself' mentality

The cousins I actually like live too far away. And with all of their kids I have a dozen or two I've never met. My wife is in a similar boat. She's also an only child, I have one sibling. My kids will only have a true cousin when my sister has a kid.
