I like the idea and it solves a problem, but it's just extra clutter and you need loads of equipment. No point in going heavy (less than 10) on strict push ups anyway so a regular backpack will do.

Heh, was going to post bands.

Way to get creative with it OP but fuk, that seems like an awkward hassle for something with plenty of substitutes.

Only up to 80 lbs though..

Imagine a bench press that would only allow you to go up to 205 lbs.

What are you going to do once you need to keep progressing? You’d be screwed and forced to abandon the exercise

A regular backpack will rip after about 100-120 lbs max. Plus, the effort to get it on and into position makes it almost impossible.

Advanced trainees should ideally train at 80-90% of their 1RM in order to keep progressing

But at the end of the day it’s just a vanity issue.. that’s the only downside at all to the barbell. It provides so many benefits and it’s needed for the device to work. Are guys really this worried about what other people would think when you’re using the device?

If it’s that self conscious to people, just don’t do them in the presence of an HBB. Unless you’re jacked because she’ll likely be mirin regardless.

i actually love this. i have a pretty minimal gym setup in my spare room. i squat out of just squat stands and i bench off of a wooden bench i built myself.

1) its annoying to readjust the squat stands. you have to fully strip and remove the bar
2) the bench isnt used for anything else, so it is in the way a lot and i dont have a ton of space.

should pitch this to homegym/minimalist types.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, they would be a good niche as well as the hardcore powerlifting/ garage type gym crowds. Those are the two target markets that I plan on reaching out to.

If wrist health is a concern, just use dumbbells or push-up handles. They will also allow you to perform the movement from a deficit which will make it even more effective

The design flaw is the ****ing barbell attached to your backpack. It looks stupid as fuk and not very practical. You should weld hooks to the backpack and use those to remove the backpack.

But it's not. Imagine doing this in a commercial gym with a giant barbell stuck to your back, then getting up just to re-rack the barbell with a bunch of plates also protruding from your back. It seems like a hazard, especially if the area you're doing it in has people around you.

Unless you're doing this is a cage, the practicality of having a barbell stuck to your back is not great. I love the idea, it just needs some streamlining.

Maybe shorten the barbell, make a quick release, and add some safeties that make contact with the ground if you lay flat to deload you and allow you to push quick release?

OP, are you aware of the Atlas Trainer?

https://outdoorsmans.com/collections/weight-carrier

I will say this, if the price is right and it meets my training requirements, I will buy it.

To give you an idea for my type of training:

Walking lunges
Speed walking uphill, downhill
Stairs

When the weight is on your back as opposed to all around you, it makes it a bit more difficult. It's easy to stand upright with a weighted vest but with all the weight on your back, it's much harder to maintain an upright posture. For guys like forest firefighters, hunters and campers, it'll simulate reality better than a vest. Most vests top out at around 45-50 lbs too, but in that video I posted, the pack is 60 lbs, though I'd like to get up to training with 90 lbs.

Rucking in general is very good training too.

Also, curious about using clamps instead rather than loading pins so the weight stays in one place and doesn't bounce around.

Im glad you like the idea, but you’re looking at the barbell aspect the wrong way. Tell me what will even replace the barbell? There is no way around it. Plus, every single powerlifting exercise requires a barbell. It’s not an issue to use a barbell for this exercise either.

The barbell is no more of a hazard than when using a barbell for squats or deadlifts. It requires basically the exact same amount of space. You guys are just holding the vanity of this device above the actual problem that it solves... that makes zero sense.

If you want to progress on push-ups and get results, you will basically have no choice but to use a device like this unless you have access to a pitshark machine.

These are good ideas, but the problem is that once you start adding in all of these features, it takes away the universal usablility/simplification of it, and also the effectiveness. Think of it like a smith machine vs bench press - sure, the smith machine is safer, but the bench press will provide much better results.

That’s awesome, I’ve never seen that before. Would love it if I had this set-up at my gym as well, but that’s the problem. This is unfortunately not universally available and the atlas trainer itself is not usable for push-ups from what I can tell (doesn’t look like the back surface is flat) and on top of that it wouldn’t be independently loadable/usable for heavy weights, nor is it very affordable. $300 is very steep. With the device I created, you can walk into just about any gym and it will be usable, the entire device only weighs 10 lbs so it’s very transportable. It can also be producible at a much lower cost than that.

And yes, I have a very strong clamp for it that holds the weight in place because I wanted this device to be multifunctional for weighted chin-ups, pull-ups, and other closed chained exercises as well.

If the squat is the king of all exercises, then the pull-up should be acknowledged with the same royalty. Simply stated, the pull-up is the squat for the upper body.
