Just lol at people that think that plumbers only unclog poop in toilets. This is part of the work, but far from everything.

And OP, plumbing definitely isn't what it used to be. Just like most trade, it requires a lot more knowledge than most people would think. There are way more materials than before. The building code is way more elaborated. And everything from sinks to hot water tanks are also more advance than before. Not saying that its rocket science but it takes knowledge, at least more than you'd think.

i'm 39 y/o oldman officecel and have aches and pains from being a normie that lifts. iif i went the tradie route, i'd imagine i'd have more body aches and less time/energy to lift

Depends what trade. A fat tradie that smokes and eat garbage and lift heavy objects will probably have more problems than you are having.

But someone could very well argue that the body is made to move and a trade that doesn't require heavy lifting and the tradie eats healthy and isn't fat will have a generally healthier body than an officecel sitting in front of a computer all day...

How many actual plumbers unclog toilets? Around here a union plumber is billed out at 135/hr. With a trip charge, no one is paying 405 dollars to unclog a toilet.

I realize there are plenty non union tradies out there, but even their break even starts at around 55/hr for house calls.

But whatever helps the averagr office cel.

I follow a financial firm on linked in, they posted an entry level hr position ( see $12/hr with no advancement), with 597 applicants. Probably all have masters degrees too.

What about Air Traffic controllers, where a degree is not required. If you get hired enroute as a center they are all at least a Level 10, and most are a level 12.. So you pass all your training and you end up making this as a Professional Controller for the FAA

(not updated to 2019, this is 2018)

Bottom number is the minimum once your a Professional controller, top is the most you can make base pay.

There was a time when 'white collar employees' sat back in their office doing book work getting paid a lot more then tradies and having tons of better benefits. The simple truth of the situation is, that was when a college degree (bachelors degree) was rare and having one made you stand out above other individuals. Too many people sent their kids to school. Too many people have worthless bachelors degrees. Its an over-saturated market. Skilled tradesmen is in demand now.


The most money to be made is in owning your own business and having others work for you. Being a tradesman that eventually starts his own company and having employees working for you is hands down one of the most effective paths to wealth. Most tradies aren't really that smart but the ones that are start making good money at 18 years old. They build themselves up. By the time they are in their late 20s early 30s they can be self employed. By the time they are in their 40s they can have enough employees to do the chit tier work.


There are absolutely 18-19 year old tradies making 60-70K per year debt free. And there are absolutely 23-25 year old tradies making 75-100K per year, debt free.




Assuming you've got a professional career and its in STEM you can make a lot of money. Better work environment. Better benefits. Etc. But if your deep into debt on graduation and you start working your way up making like 60K per year at 23-24 years old. You'll be behind the curve.


I live in the South and lots of oilfield here. But its not uncommon to see tradies in 60-80 thousand dollar trucks and their stay at home wife is driving a 75-125 thousand dollar SUV. They make a lot of money and they YOLO it up.

People are forgetting trade jobs are hard work. You see the money they can make but don't think about how hard they have to grind out in that job for decades and wear out their bodies. And the shifts suck a lot of the time, having to wake up at 4-5 am.

If I'd go the tradie route, I'd probably try to get into heavy machinery operator. 6 month course, and then all you do is control the heavy machinery that does all the work. Much easier work compared to most other trade work and they can make bank

Was a heavy equipment tradie a long time ago before school/office/exec time, did it from 17-25.

It can be hard on the body, lots of bouncing (expecially in winter). Everyone I know who did it for any length of time has lost some hearing and dealt with some back issues. It's not as physically work intensive as carpentry or other more physical trades, but you typically work longer hours as a result. 12/day 6/week is the norm in summer construction season. My personal record is 112 days straight in the bush the year I turned 21.

Unless you are in a mining environment or a municipal worker a lot of the time it's road gigs too, spent half my 20s in camps and hotels chasing yellow gear around Western Canada.

Skip the course, it gains you nothing for the most part. Start on the shovel, get on the packer, and then work your way up to the production gear.

Tradie here work at a Kia dealership by Vancouver not the best selling car manufacturer but a lot of the techs made over 100k in 2018 working about 160 to 170 hours a month. It can be hard but if ur in shape it's no problem.

This has been discussed lots but the reality of it is 90% of people in either path (tradie or officecel) make crap money and hate their lives.

Except that in more and more jurisdictions, you need certifications and "tickets" to work on jobs, which is why wages are higher than before. Unions pushed this really hard to prevent cheap labor from taking good jobs.

Also good luck with your flooding insurance claim when you hired an uncertified illegal to do your plumbing

I wouldn't want to go back to packing a lunch. My company caters my lunch half the week and 1-2 times a week I work from home. If need be I just order food.

that article if full of chit, the majority of plumbers do not make 90k a year. Unless you live in a expensive city like NY or SF most plumbers won’t sniff that

when we had a contractor try to scam us on a chitty flooring job, I threatened to report him to the contactors licence board and showed him pictures I'd taken of all the illegals he'd had working on the jobsite, so he could identify them to the board.

He had to pay us back everything and lost his chit having a tantrum which was hilarious

Its true but now companies here in Alberta have "doubled-breasted" where they have one part of their company is union and the other part is non-union. They are trying hard to erode the tradie jobs here. It used to be MASSIVE money in the oil/gas industry here, 45/hr $60 total package ($6/hr company paid pension contributions that pyramided with overtime), double time all day saturday/sunday no matter how many hours you worked in the week, double time after 10 hours/day. On a 10on-4off schedule you are making over 150k a year with camp/bussing provided. Now thats all time and a half and they killed the pension contributions.
