Plenty of blame to go around:

- the self-esteem and inner beauty movements
- complete lack of self-discipline
- the food industry and the way the government deals with it (corn subsidization, etc)
- technological advances that make it more convenient for people to sit around and look at their phones all day

We need more fat shaming. Convenient food isn't going anywhere, and neither is the internet/sedentary entertainment. I get that "body positivity" has good intentions, but we don't need to convince people to get fat; people need motivation to stop stuffing their faces and sitting around (and apparently health isn't a good enough motivation for most of us).

Unfortunately, the rate of obesity appears to be increasing more quickly for women than men. So unless you're part of the Harpoon Throwing Crew (credit to dj924s), your aestheticness will be for nothing.

Strong misleading graph, overlay this one and you'll see HFCS picks up right where sugar left off.

Sugars, HFCS, the Government subsidizing trash foods (corn), the assbackwards food pyramid, demonizing fats, all these efforts by the Government to make people healthy did the exact opposite at every turn. People eat complete trash processed crap now, it's what most people eat entirely.

Go shopping, don't be a creeper (or much of one), but just look at people's shopping carts (God help you if you try this at Walmart). You can tell instantly why people are obese right then and there.

Entirely bullchit. People aren't eating more and moving less now when compared to 1950 or the 1990s. Fuk off with that, no offense. The pushed their food pyramid, they subsidized corn so now high fructose corn syrup is everywhere, they told us fats were causing heart attacks, they told us to eat majority breads and carbs -- and we got fat. We move now more than we did in the 1990s and people aren't simply eating more with bigger portions. What changes was WHAT we are now eating.
What are you two spewing? Of course you're both agreeing with each other too.

How are you on a BB forum sharing misinformation? It's like the fat logic hoops that everyone jumps through to defend their balloon in size from ages 20-30.

Seriously... a BB forum where people are knocking CICO. What is this garbage?

And here's another one showing that IF there are negative factors from HFCS you can negate this by not being a fat lazy slob

People are lazy and eat more calories than they burn. Period.

When I went to Korea last year, I noticed that you can walk around all day and maybe see one or two people that fat, and that is despite the growing prevalence of the "Western" diet. Being fat is stigmatized there. Sure, you can eat like a pig if you want, but people will look at you funny instead of celebrating your "body positivity." I don't think fat people should be outright insulted or bullied, but they certainly shouldn't be celebrated. It's really no different from a drug addiction. We shouldn't treat them as subhuman, but society as a whole should still disapprove.

One thing that I think might contribute is our alcohol culture.

Events and family/friend gatherings most likely involve alcohol, bar hopping and binge drinking are glorified pastimes, especially in highschool and college, and many have a beer or a glass of wine daily.

Every bud light is 110 calories. A glass of red wine is 125 calories. It all adds up pretty damn quickly.

Just looked at New York and it has a 25.7% adult obesity rate, up from 9.3% in 1990. I didn't even realize that over quarter of the population is overweight. The state is also considered to be the 7th lowest in obesity rate. This is all in 2017. Can't imagine what it is now.
According to the most recent data, adult obesity rates now exceed 35% in seven states, 30% in 29 states and 25% in 48 states.

That's how alcohol culture has always been, and alcohol consumption is higher in other countries like Russia and South Korea. It's far from being one of the main culprits.

I was blown away a week ago when the misc had a similar discussion and someone cited CDC data showing that the average 20 year-old woman is 5'4" and 170 pounds. That's fukking insane. And the average person puts on 1-2 pounds a year, meaning that this new generation will be pushing 200 pounds at 30 (at 5'4" !). Reason #32502 that the United States cannot have "Medicare for All." There is no way we can afford ballooning medical costs associated with ballooning waistlines.

Yes and since 2016 it has gone up A LOT.... I feel like society has crossed over and lessened awareness while the epidemic J-curve gets steeper. It's like everyone knows about the problem, but no one really gives a fuk.

Obesity is the reason why dating in America is such a sht show for men. 40% of American women are obese, another 30% are overweight. Just by not being fat makes a woman a rare resource in the US.

I believe they measure by BMI and according to that scale, I'm considered overweight. You'll need to slash off some percentages for people who maintain a gym lifestyle. Even then, the percentage is still abnormally high.

Lmao at exercise being the key

You burn negligible amounts of calories even exercising at a high heart rate, it's the vast amount of calorie dense chit food that people eat that makes them fat

It doesn't help with bullchit government guidelines that say a small female can eat 2200 cals a day, meaning they eat more like 3500 with delusional calorie guesstimates

The average wagecel can spend all his free time sitting on his ass watching Netflix and ESPN and still not be a fatty fat fat if he just chills on the snacks and beer. Junkies tend not to be overweight and they spend a lot of time face down

That's excuse making bullshiit. I grew up in the 90's, and people definitely knew excessive sugar was bad for them and that stuff like excessive sodas and sweet junk food would make them fat. Things like diet sodas were plenty popular by that time, which indicated that people were becoming aware of the issues with sugar and obesity. There has also been a steady anti-sugar campaign since at least that time for the dental health aspsect of it, which I can recall being pushed just as much in school as stuff like the food pyramid scale bs.

The real issue is that modern day levels of gluttony, entitlement, and demand for instant gratifcation have risen in line with ever expanding availability. Food in a place like the United States was plentiful by the 1990's, but you still had to drive your fatasss somewhere at a minimum to get it, for the most part. All you really had was ordering by phone for pizza delivery. Now you can have junk food from basically any shiithole resaurant delivered to your door with a few taps on smartphone with food delivery aps. You can get your groceries pre-packed by w shop for pickup, or even delivered to your door. Hell, people barely leave the house for a damn thing that doesn't involve eating or drinking booze or some shiit nowadays.

Those are the real reasons. Quit being a mongoloid who just blames everything on one convenient entity like the government. Go figure kids are still fat and getting fatter after Michelle Obama ruined their school lunches, though.
