Well, it's not a bad thing to be contrary - ideas need to be challenged, especially popular ones, and the more firmly held an idea the higher the likelihood that it isn't as sound as it seems.

But being contrary for the sake of being contrary is a bit of a misguided aim - when you reject ideasbecausethey're popular you're exactly the same as all the people who hold that idea because it's popular, but you've added in anger, bitterness, an attempt to distance oneself from "the unthinking masses" has been born from a desire to be accepted.

I'm certainly not afraid of going against the grain, but that doesn't mean that the direction in which I choose to go must always be determined by the grain. I choose my position based on the merits of the individual ideas, not on how many people agree with them.
