I don’t like the whole “military are heroes” thing. It’s toxic all around.
They CAN be heroes, depending on the situation they find themselves in, just like other people can.
But they are not automatically heroes for joining and in many cases don’t sacrifice ****...and the ones that do sacrifice something usually get PTSD from it and feel like anything but hero and find the tag uncomfortable at best, mind-breaking at worst.
They are people, doing a highly dangerous job.
There is no war we need to be fighting to protect ourselves or our freedom right now, or indeed anyone else’s on our ally list.
A very close family friend served multiple tours in the Middle East in the special forces and he doesn’t feel like a hero but thankfully doesn’t seem to have been irreparably damaged by the experience either.
They have a very challenging job, but that is not heroic of its own right.
(Not anti military at all. I just think the hero culture is highly detrimental all around as it stops the issues being addressed for veterans and sets them apart from everyone else making them feel isolated. It’s just a lip service thing where they aren’t viewed as people who face the same challenges we do and need the same help we do (more so tbh).
It’s a direct barrier to helping veterans.

They get more respect from me than any bravado kid in uniform, who just take money away from healthcare to blow it up somewhere.

Was in at the tail end of desert storm but I was in training never deployed. So I mostly sat in the barracks and played video games for 4 years when we weren't training. So yeah I sucked up that taxpayer money and never even had to earn it. I did all my time in 18th airborne corps arty so we did do a lot of support missions to NTC, JRTC and got to fly around and play dope on a rope a lot which was pretty fun.

All those men in Vietnam died so you and I wouldnt be drafted to go kill 3rd world people. Their sacrifice has allowed us the comfort of choice. As for the argument OP is making most people do not join up just for a paycheck. I think Pat Tillman is proof of that.

The military is basically a waste of money, resources and lives.
Sometimes its necessary. Like when Germany invaded Sovietunion the soviets had to defend themselves to save lives.
Nowadays it's mostly a moneymaking scam.
The secret service creates a security problem, the media whip up emotions in the population, the government used taxmoney away from health and education and buys military equipment, the soldiets use that up in training and war.
Repeat.
The taxpayer pays soldiers, generals and arms dealers and manufacturers.
As return they get veterans with PTSD and a lot of upset people who don't care about sacrificing themselves to punish the invaders.
