I'm honestly over hearing about how bad waiters/waitresses have it. It's easily the best no-skill job for the money they can make. Unless you're working some local diner business that isn't selling booze and stuff too, it's a decent deal. I'm not going to get way into it, but they virtually all make double to triple minimum wage, if not more, for what they do after tips.

If it's so horrible, then why is it that every fkn time I hear about stuff like this, people look at me like I'm some sort of madman when I suggest they start supporting the abandonment of tipping culture for restaurants switching to straight hourly, non-tipped wages? They always freak the fuk out and whine about how it should be "their choice on how to tip for service!!!!". Meanwhile, they literally just got done crying about someone choosing to leave a chitty tip (over what was probably chitty service), and rant and rave about how wait staff are supposedly a shafted class of workers. Go work in some factory that pays barely above minimum wage if you want to see legit chitty work that isn't financially rewarding whatsoever.

Why the fuk is it anyone's business how much you tip? Can't people keep things to themselves instead of making everything about them.

Also tipping is retarded, I never tip and never will. If people want to cry about working a chitty low pay job they can always go get a better job.

I’ve done the server job before and while I did enjoy tips, especially cash I’m firmly against tipping culture. It’s not the easiest job I’ve done but it’s close. Still there were servers who were legit terrible and then would complain when they got chit tips. It was funny always watching them run around trying to rectify mistakes while I only ever needed to hustle if we were short staffed and I was covering half the restaurant. Still averaged well over 20% every night. Don’t miss the job at all though

Exactly, entitled servers just need to stop whining. I hope the senator loses his job.
If tipping is socialism, why don't people tip in socialist countries?

Because tipping is meant to encourage better service. So you tip better as service gets better. that's how I do it.

Capitalism has always been about encouraging greater performance by providing greater rewards for the individual who performs best.

I know what I'm ordering in advance so waiters are literally just relaying my order. Wish places would use tablet type devices on the table where you just press button your order then a runner brings it out.

If you eat out constantly tips do add up.

This.

And anyone who says serving is an easy no-brain job - doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Does it require an advanced degree? No. But it ain’t easy. Work a shift in a busy fast-paced restaurant then come tell me how easy it is.

And guess what? The server has to tip out that food runner, plus the bussers and bar for making the drinks...so if you leave a 20% tip, your server probably keeps about half of that.

So when you stiff your server, you are potentially COSTING them money, because most restaurants make the server tip out regardless of the tips left by the customers...e.g. for a $100 bill the server will be expected to tip out $10 spread among the support staff...but if you stiff him, that $10 is still expected to be tipped out.

You’re right about servers making way more than minimum wage working in a good restaurant...and that is also why tipping won’t be replaced by higher wages. No restaurant can afford to pay $40/hour to their servers...so most servers would quit the day tipping was forbidden, because you’re essentially asking them to do the same chit job for less money, all while having to pay a higher cost for your drinks and food to subsidize the higher wages. Result: customer still pays more for their bill, restaurant becomes much tighter budget-wise, and server makes less money. Not to mention if tips weren’t a factor most servers wouldn’t put in the same effort.

Here's this amazing idea. Why don't restaurants just pay their staff properly instead of expecting their customers to cover the difference in tips.

Expecting the waiter/customer, rather rather than the restaurant to make sure the busser is paid is simply a retarded system, and I'm surprised it's even allowed.

Many servers in my restaurant have other full-time jobs but serve part-time for the extra $. Because the $ is good enough to warrant it. There’s a dude in my place who is a Vice Principal of a school and still works the job for extra $.

Take away tipping, and you will lose all the servers. It’s too much bull-chit and drama for minimum wage.

Simple: because no restaurant can afford to do so. Tipping is what makes serving/bussing/bar tending jobs worth it - e.g. good paying jobs that are well above minimum wage. Take away tipping and I bet a huge percentage of service people would quit and choose an easier job.

Wanna know the reason restaurants can't afford to pay them?

Because what they're doing isn't worth what they want to be paid.

The reason an employer pays an employee is because that employee generates more money for them, that paying them is a profitable thing to do, for them.

Waiters/waitresses aren't worth the money they want to be paid, they don't generate anything.

Well until the service industry becomes totally automated, they are obviously serving an important function for a restaurant: they are facilitating the entire business. Problem is restaurants run on a very tight margin as it is, insane overhead involved in running a restaurant, so those wages have to come from somewhere...if you expect wages to go up, expect the price of your meal to skyrocket as well.

Restaurants are notoriously difficult to succeed at, doing away with tipping would only make it harder.

Tipping isn't a requirement. Maybe the customer is an *******, maybe he/she wasn't.

That person should sue the Senator for slander.

If you are ever a ceo, the key is to make sure all of your employees make at least 25k-30k a year. That's $8-$10 an hour. Thats enough for comfortable living. Ive already done the math.

So if the employee makes $6-$8 salary - tips boost it up to $10-$15 but that depends on if the tips are splitted also. So waiters make a decent Iiving.

Agree. The tip should be about the quality of the service, not the quality of the food. If the food is bad then send it back or ask to speak with the manager. Bad food doesn't get fixed by stiffing the waiter.

10% if server was terrible, forgot stuff, you had to wait long without explanation.
15% is meh service.
20% is good service
20+% + note on receipt or chat with manager about named server and your how excellent the service was.

The latter allows the best to rise to the top and work more. You are actually helping other people out, by rewarding the best servers with a good tip and good word in with their bosses.

Yeah, I waited in college. I think everyone should have to have that job at one point in your life. A lot of incels would probably greatly benefit from the forced socialization + post work party scene. Also, gives you a good picture of all the cheap and awful people out there. Don’t worry you guys crying about tipping, we know who you are IRL, and how miserable you are in person as well. Also, if you repeatedly go to the same place and tip poorly, well....you should expect at a minimum terrible service...and some terrible servers have been known to be much worse.
Pretty much my usual method.

And also understandable. I will still tip a couple of bucks even if my bill is under $10.

Senator shouldn't have outed the person by name.

The people I give the best tips to aren't servers though.

Yeah get what you're saying.

But it's like, if a guy is selling socks, and no one wants to buy his socks... should people start tipping him to stop his business from failing?
