Obviously he couldn't stop the first attack, it's the fact that he lets her walk away unharmed and does nothing. How can you let some 51 year old woman with her back turned walk away after stabbing your child! Could have drop kicked her in her back at the very least.

So now we are crossing from 'self defense' to revenge. People don't realize that in the heat of the moment the brain almost always makes the correct decision, as this guy did. Imagine he lunges at her and gets 4 inches of metal jabbed into his heart. Now he is dead. It's better for him to go and take the kid to the hospital as fast as possible. His wife saw what happened, and he did not.

Prevented more attacks how? He did fuk all. I seriously wonder what he would do had the woman actually forcefully went for the whole family. They'd have all probably paid the price because of some weak coward that doesn't have the balls to overpower some old woman.
