Politics. It touches on rich vs poor, climate change and other topics that are magnets to the self righteous. It was ok but over-hyped. Too many messages, too much symbolism and too many metaphors.

It’s not, it’s just the subtext of it is divisive in how you see it, because it exposes racist people who hate white people and comes off as a litmus test of that and how people take it.

Most people see the irony and flavor in some of the setups but people who have a fuked up/malicious/biased view of white people tend to take it as an incel piece.

That’s also part of what makes it such a brilliant masterpiece as a meta social commentary.

When was the last time best male lead and best movie was the same?
The silence of the lambs for sure did, but was there anything more recent? American beauty, LOTR? (though I doubt LOTR won best lead).

It’s very hard to win both, especially with a movie like The Joker were Phoenix plays such a big role. Both in the sense or screen time, and also in the sense of character type.

The oscars got it pretty much correct this year. Joe Pesci should win for best supporting actor imo, but it was due time for Brad Pitt I guess so that's why they gave it to him. Also Mendes maybe should have won best director but that one was close.

There have been far worse choices in previous years.

i thought this was a great turn for the academy awards, they turned away from their stupid SJW bull**** and actors voting for movies about acting.

Parasite was a great thriller, great story, great acting, very unique, and gave a great perspective to Americans how things are in other countries. Doesnt matter how smart and ingenuitive you are as a teenager/young adult, if you come from poverty and didnt do great in school from the youngest age, you are destined for poverty and held down no matter how hard you work or how smart you become.

Joaquim carried that movie from start to finish. Imagine Brad Pitt or Leo Di as the lead instead, and the whole movie falls apart. The movie was literally Joaquim Phoenix Acting Skills: The Movie. It was a great movie, but it was 100% about his skills rather than the plot, or the cinematic.

Plot even sounds ordinary when you write it out: Depressed man who is oppressed by society, has a psychotic break and kills people.

Every single shot and camera angle focuses intently on his facial expression and mannerism, rather than the surroundings, what is going on, etc.
