Good question I will tell you what I would do, very simple:

Put all weak and old people (let's say 65+) in quarantaine and work out a logistical system to get them everything they need to survive X period.

Meanwhile let the younger population build up herd immunity. (Disclaimer; I read 1/5 of young still end up in the hospital but I strongly doubt this and haven't read the full article). Anyway, health system will be under pressure anyway because of massive panic and everybody who coughs starts to get scared, so prepare the system as good as you can.

I already knew this but this just solidifies it. No way people should be reacting the way they are to this.... complete nonsense. You can't overreact every year cause of flu illness variances. If this was something like Ebola outbreak then yes lock down is necessary but this no. At this point it has become political hysteria, money making machine so it isn't going to stop, expect it to happen every year until people stop standing for it.

There were two waves of it.
The people who got it the first time were immune.
The second wave caused people to basically drown in their own fluids.
They bled from the ears, eyes, coughed up blood.
People would contract it and be dead in 24hrs.
Fingers, ears, nose and face would turn blue form lack of oxygen.

It was more than the flu.

I watch another show on Smithsonian, about the Spanish Flu, last night.
The patient zero was an army cook in Kansas who survived and died in 1968.

As stated by the doctor we do not know if the cause of those deaths is COVID though. And Bloomberg stated that from the patients who had COVID and died, 99% had other illnesses, conditions.

Im with you and OP, the VAST majority of damage from this pandemic is from the meida and the people's reaction to their fear mongering.

This thing is killing people that are on mean octogenarians, in other words people that dont have long left on this earth already. Not saying thats nothing, but is it cause enough to shut theglobal economy down?!

I'm just not sold on the severity of this outbreak, I have heard the official reasoning for the measures being taken a hundred times, still not 100% convinced. That fact that the media is in lock step pushing all of us toBE AFRAIDis reason enough for me to be skeptical as all fuk as to the actual threat brought on by the Jung Flu.

"Italy had almost 500 people die yesterday!!" What they forget to tell you is that theyre almost ALL 75+ AND have multiple underlying health issues prior to contracting the virus, hmmmm.

Let's look at the past pandemics:

The H1N1 virus (colloquially known as swine flu) was "first detected in April of 2009 in the United States, and spread quickly around the world," despite the virus being of Mexican origin, as we later discovered. The Obama administration had declared it a "public health emergency" in late April, and by June, the World Health Organization declared it the "first flu pandemic in 40 years."

It wasn't until October of 2009, though, that Obama personally recognized it as a national emergency with the "potential to overburden health care resources in some localities." By that time, over one thousand Americans had died from it. The CDC estimates that between 151,700 and 575,400 people died worldwide from H1N1 virus infection in the first year that it circulated. These were not typically older patients with pre-existing infirmities who were being killed by the infections, either. Unlike the seasonal flu, the H1N1 almost exclusively affected children and adults under 65. It was quite easily transmitted from person to person, too, passed "by exposure to infected droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing that can be inhaled, or that can contaminate hands or surfaces."

In the end, over 60 million Americans were infected by H1N1. It led to 273,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S. alone.

people still clinging to the media problem bullchit

I am a cop and we have been getting nothing but fake news and Media hysteria and its ruining the career and made almost everyone lose respect for my profession.

I also blamed the media for all of this for about the first couple days of March then realized even though the Media probably DID latch onto this for the same reasons of exploiting a small problem to gain traction, it is now well beyond that and is a very real problem.

Fortunately US has taking actions to make it so we are not in the same situation as Italy, they didnt take the isolation steps we are taking now until AFTER their hospitals were already overcrowded and cases were in the thousands. We are almost on par with them for daily # of cases growing, which is insanely good progress considering the population difference.

We also have a government working around the clock trying to find immediate AND long term solutions to both the economy, the virus, and preventing future outbreaks from other possible virus's.

I've had it for about a week and it's really nothing if you're otherwise healthy. I had flu-flu in 2017 which kicked my ass a lot harder than this China disease.

It must suck for older people,especially if they are unlucky enough to live in an area infested with TB carrying 3rd world migrants like southern Italy.

Most people don’t realize that this is the beginning. The people that say, “People are overreacting!” Don’t understand the potential this virus have and the low numbers of deaths from it is a result of the virus being around for only a month or two in the US. It’s almost impossible to quarantine the infected because we don’t know who is infected until a week later. By the time the patient is brought to the hospital they’ve infected people without knowing it.

Maybe the “just a flu” crowd can watch this little experiment go down.

The UK waited longer than almost any country to implement strict control measures. They at first tried a terrible herd immunity strategy. They’re going to pay severely for it.

Right now UK death toll is at 130. Their death toll will surge last 1000 by April 1st, and past 10k by mid April. By end of the next month they will likely be the world leader in total deaths.

If this virus is as virulent as other coronaviruses then the expected mortality rate is .01%. As a baseline Germany would normally see upwards of 2000 deaths annually in a normal flu season based on new coronavirus strains.

No point in wrecking the economy leaving young people without jobs and potentially homeless to save an older at risk population that most likely has preexisting conditions anyways. I understand they don't want to overload the healthcare system but at what point do you start valuing young healthy people's livlihood over an already at risk population, its natural selection.
