I feel like people have had enough and we're willing this thing to be done in the US. I'm onboard because I'm more concerned about the economy than loss of life due to the virus, but my gut tells me it's too soon and we should have solidly quarantined until May 15. We could be ruining summer by not waiting a couple weeks. Hope I'm wrong. Regardless, next sunny weekend, if the trails are open I'm going for a hike.

If Trump came out and said that everyone should stay indoors for the next 2 weeks. No running. No hiking. No trips to the park. etc. and then everything starts opening up again, then I think almost everyone would be on board for that. The problem is that some governors are saying that everything is closed until July, while others are saying nothing is closed. The medical people won't commit to any specific date. Some want it to last until there are no more cases. What this all leads to is lack of confidence in any of the people making decisions. Without confidence in our leaders, people begin to ignore them.

How would one hear about this unless it's happening to your close friends or relatives? I've seen people getting caught by the police for stealing after being let go and having no money to support the fam.

I live in a city. Parks and sidewalks are more crowded than ever because people need exercise, but considering that every business is closed there are still more people at home than there are "out"

Mentioned this to a friend. Considering the unprecedented unemployment claims - the mood is not nearly as gloomy as 2008ish.

It's probably because of these combined factors:

1) generous mortgage forbearance
2) Trumpbux
3) Many business were deemed essential and still running
4) The premise that the layoffs/income loss is temporary

The fact almost every American is going through it might also bring a bit of solidarity.

I think they can grasp it. People were terrified for weeks. They didn’t leave their homes.

The world economy ground to a halt. None of this has ever happened. People got it.

Like I stated before, I think they’ve just decided that they’ll take their chances given the alternative of being locked in their homes any longer. And as MiscInformed pointed out, the lack of a uniform, clear directive from leaders doesn’t help.

At the end of the day the majority of people are going to do what they want to do regardless of laws or what they are told to do.

For a short time they'll tow the party line but eventually they'll go back to normal.

Pot was illegal forever and people still smoked it. Speed limits on highways have been ridiculously low for decades. People drive as fast as they feel comfortable regardless of posted speed limits. It's been proven.

I understand there's a vaccine, but people give ABSOLUTELY ZERO FUKS about influenza which has STILL killed more people in the last year than COVID-19. And the death rate for young healthy people is very low when you look at NY stats, the city where it's most prevalent.

The most disappointing aspect of this crisis is how people still allow MSM to dictate their level of worry.

It's kinda fukked up, but I generally like this new atmosphere. I have so much time to pursue all the meaningless tasks that my regular life did not allow for me to pursue. In fact, I will openly admit the following things:
1) I am much happier than ever before.
2) I spend much less money than ever before, and have less reason to.
3) My commute has dropped from 3+ total hours daily, to a short walk to my desk.
4) All of the DIYs I have been intending to complete have been done
5) My workout routine has been reinvigorated, with a brand new energy. I've spent time trying to find new ways to make it fun without weights.
6) I've been fukking KILLING it with my cut, and have dropped 20lbs. Lost only a very small amount of muscle.
7) I have ZERO sunday night "fuk I have to be up at 5:30AM anxiety" because now I wake up at 7:55AM on the dot and clock in at 8:00AM.I don't even have that "Damn I have to wake up REALLY early" anxiety on ANY weekday anymore.
8) I FINALLY learned how to ollie consistently on the skateboard, and while I'm still not great, I can at least reliably do it 7/10 times now.
9) My lack of expenses has led to an increase in my CC payments, which means my debt is beginning to drop WAY faster.
10) I have been getting commendations for all of my WFH efforts from my boss, and I'm getting recognition for completing projects that nobody is getting to. I am told it's a possibility that when this ends, I'll likely be able to take 1-2 days weekly and WFH instead of coming to the office (which is huge for me because my commute is 3+ total hours).

And this kind of attitude is partially why it has spread so quickly in the US.

Anyways, every country that has opened up too early, including Japan and Singapore (both of which had a very tight grip on the spread in the beginning), are seeing surges now. Still, we're going to have to make the choice between a second wave and the consequences of economic shutdown, which may include rioting. I don't really know which will be less harmful, but either way there's going to be considerable disruption.
