Tesla cars don't even have gears and can mostly drive themselves now. Once they get production up enough its goodbye to most gasoline vehicles in general. Of course we will still have fun cars, but I think the gasoline car is going the way of horses.

I'm not even sure who they're marketing that car to. Its comically expensive for what it offers, but it looks like it was designed by a 15 year old kid.

edit: i'll take that back. The VW Golf series come in a manual. I just completely tuned it out because i'm done with VW for one lifetime. I'm sick of their chitty cars.

Also its impossible to but the damn thing at MSRP, because all the stealerships tack on unnecessary accessories and jack up the price by $10k (at a minimum)

Its the sporadic traffic jams that are annoying. Speeding up to 40 then down to 10 then back up to 40. Traffic like this pic is a consistent 10mph at best so its not that bad.

This is where Tesla comes in handy. Braking and driving automatically in heavy traffic and long road trips. It's pretty slick.

that being said, i love manual simply because it's a more enjoyable experience for me. And I find the shifting from a stop or from braking -> acceleration to be smoother in a manual since you can feather the clutch. Everything from my Tacoma to Porsche and Mercedes SUVs are just jerkier in those scenarios and I hate it

The only place an auto really shines IMO is in heavy traffic, or slow offroading ie crawling. Manual sucks to have in either of those situations. but even in traffic, It never really bothered me that much over the course of the last 7 years living with SoCal traffic.

and op, are you sure you've driven an automatic? You would instantly know why people prefer automatic to manual if you did.

Granted I have a manual (2020 civic Hatch sport) took me about 5 months to even find the trim make, model and color in a manual and had to have it shipped to me from Iowa (i'm now in California). i'm also glad that autos are more popular becasue I don't trust that people around me know how to drive.
Some of us prefer the gearbox! I have 4 vehicles and not one of them was purchase just to get from A to B! I love rolling back when I take off and running through the gears, feeling the motor...etc! Why take that away from the purest of car guys?

Also, even though I am almost 50, I am one of those Type R guys you mentioned! I love my 'R' and it is a remarkable piece of machinery for the money. I've owned every rare Honda produced over the past 30 years and I will continue to do so through out my lifetime!

It's actually very surprising how many people don't know how to drive a manual trans.

I've always had a manual vehicle since I started driving at 16. Owned 2 automatics as my 'grocery get'r' cars and even then they were too 'boring' and I'd find myself hopping into my manual car more often so I got rid of them. Sitting in traffic isn't that big of a deal when you're use to it.

Not sure if it's still the case with today's tech, but at least based off American dealers, manuals are cheaper as well. So lower entry barrier for foreigners to start driving when comparing auto vs manual

I can still drive the manual ones with this type of stick shift:


They're a bit more tricky though. There's usually a button on the shifter that you have to push in before it will move.

When I worked valet in college the only manuals we'd valet were sh*tboxes. Like a 15 year old Dodge Neon or some Chevy Roadster(quite possibly the ugliest truck ever made)...

You cant even buy a truck with manual shift anymore. The soys are too simple they want automatics.

Although they say automatics are now more efficient than manuals...

I think manual transmission does make the car cheaper still though.

Wasn't' trying to impress anyone, just making a point...It is a $36k car that has been running better track times then several million plus dollar supercars.

Modern automatic transmissions are more efficient. Literally in every way. I completely understand the concept of wanting a manual performance car for running a track or curvy back roads. But for every day driving and commuting? No way in hell would I want a manual transmission.


A lot of other countries primarily use manual transmissions because they are cheaper to produce and the population hasn't become accustomed to driving automatics. End of story. In 2020 there aren't any advantages to driving a manual transmission other then its 'funner' when you are driving for recreation.

I used to have an fn2 type R. It wasn't the fastest car in the world but it was amazingly fun, always put a smile on my face round a twisty road.

I hated it in traffic though, having to go past 4000 revs to get anywhere, and the clutch was stiff as fk, as was the suspension. I imagine the newer ones with the turbos and adaptive suspension are a more bearable as a daily though

I had a 2000 Integra DC2 Type R and this Civic Type R blows it out of water.

Ill never own another automatic for as long as I live. I don't like how they shift, I don't like the disconnect, I don't like how unattended you can get, and I don't like the reliability. my dd is a mini and 2nd car is a classic I've had for years. if I see a car I really like, and love every feature and price, but it's an automatic, I will not buy it. If it's my favorite car and it's an automatic, I will not buy it. dead serious I don't want an automatic.
