There are tons of businesses hiring right now that will afford you enough wage to live in a decent suburb while also providing medical insurance. Some of them require actual work though.

The post-war middle class rise in the suburbs was due to low-interest mortgages and job oppurtunities being handed out to returning white soldiers as part of their GI Bill benefits while black soldiers who fought in the same war were denied both. White families actively worked to keep them out of the suburbs and banks redlined them into section 8 housing and poor neighbourhoods with mortgage rates that were in double digits.

While white families prospered in these suburban neighbourhoods with rising home values and with available job opportunities, black families never did and they were stuck in neighbourhoods with little to no investment in commerce or education, eventually decaying into the ghettos of today.

White families eventually bore children and grandchildren who lived in and grew up in similar socioeconomic situations that their grandparents were gifted as a result of their service. Black families had children and grandchildren that grew up in the same destitute situation. Of course this doesn't apply to every white or black family but when analyzing the reason for such a large disparity in the overall wealth gap between the two in a country that happens to have a long history of discrimination towards that particular group of people, it's not hard to follow the breadcrumbs from there.

So yes, when you're talking about a group of people who were actively pushed down the economic ladder by the US beaurocracy and the population at the time, I'm not opposed to giving said group of people access to some benefits to help undo the damage.
