I saw his video (with him himself in front of a whiteboard) and I am glad I did watch it from what he explained about the mechanics of deadlifting.

The entire "powerlifting is the best approach" thing is the main issue.
Powerlifting is fun and all, but so many people get into lifting to get a juicy body with big muscles and low fat percentage. Then they get duped into doing dumb strength based programs that mainly train your ass and legs, when what they really need is some volume heavy, safe bodybuilding routine with a low calorie diet.

390 back squat
285 bench press
500 deadlift (I don't DL anymore)

So many feels ITT
Its good for a beginners 1st month and thats it
They 'got' me as a beginner (the senior guys on BB forums)
Did it for a year, got big legs and ass, no upper body (t rex)
A couple benefits;
I'll never have to train legs seriously again
Built good back strength, so posture is good
Ii did dramatically increase my power base athletically, sprinting etc

i did that dumb ass program for 4 months. my lifts barely improved. i barely made any gains
i still remember thinking this chit SUCKS. im still mad i wasted 4 months doing that. i never listened to misc for lifting advice again srs

Then people eat huge surpluses running these types of programs and wonder why they're gaining mostly fat.

It's completely retarded. Even if your goal is just to get stronger, why would rows and chinups/pulldowns not be a serious part of your routine? Because the routine isn't even made to make you stronger in general, just better in the big 3. No clue why anyone would run that garbage. Novices and anyone else will benefit from more volume and a more serious emphasis on pulling movements

I think it was good as a beginner for practicing good technique and as a strength training experience (getting to lift something with weight and actually pushing yourself).
But in retrospect, I didn't like how absolute the program was - the attitude was do this exactly and don't alter it because I said so. I also think it was poorly programmed, for example, there was no recommendation about rest time between sets besides suggesting around 1 min. But you need more recovery for strength training especially when the weights go higher.
It would also put me to the point of overtraining and I would hate going to the gym and take 6 months off at a time lol. Some of that is my fault, but I think the way it was written and its programming flaws were too influential on a beginner lifter.

I still think Starting Strength is one of the best places to start for a new lifter who isn't going to be lifting under the guidance of a good trainer. I went into SS at like 5'8 155lbs and moved on when I'd hit 175lbs. I don't remember my starting lifts but when I quit I was benching something like 210x5, overhead pressing 155lbsx5, Squatting 315x5 and deadlifing 345x5. I can't remember my power clean numbers TBH, but it was something over 200lbs for 3 reps. Really not 'bad' strength levels for a relatively new lifter and I'd mastered 5 basic lifts with really good technique. Obviously a big framed/heavier guy will be lifting a lot more then that after SS. I did not do GOMAD though. And again I wasn't on it for as long as most people/did not do the Texas Method.
When my girlfriend started lifting I put her on an upper/lower. Training everything 2x per week. Progressively overload compound movements by 5lb per week. If she's feeling like crap one session and can't get the reps. I drop the weight. She finishes her sets for that exercise with some light sets for 15-25 reps. Following time she hits that lift go back to where she stalled (Usually smashes it).
She's been consistently lifting more weight and has been losing fat slowly but surely, week after week. Scale shows her weight hasn't chained much so she's obviously putting on muscle (Dem dere newb gains). She's also getting a bit firmer which confirms losing fat/gaining muscle.
Use 5 rep sets on squats. Every other exercise is 8-15 reps. If she needs a rest, I lighten the weight and she does 15-25 rep sets, same number of sets/volume whether she is using her normal weight or on a deload day. Knowing what I know now I think this method slash U/L is superior for a new lifter. Her goal is a sexier body and she doesn't care what amount of weight she moves.
I really should have taken before/progress pics and after pics in-case I decide to start training females one day. That methodology ^ is working like a freaking charm.
