It's not about bettering themselves, it's about their insecurity needing to find a way to one-up other people. If you remember NVious, he was the absolute worst person about this.
I get about looking down on the plebs, one of my worst character traits is that I shoot holes in everyone I meet. But thank God I never fell into that "everyone else but me is a sheep!" trap. A comforting lie to tell a wounded ego for sure. Everyone's dealing with their own chit, but no one's an empty automaton, and it's sure as chit isn't because they haven't read Tolstoy like an enlightened superior person has. If you start believing they are, then you really just don't know them well enough.

The are two "buddhas"
The buddha that walks among the people, even though he has become enlightened.
And the buddha that cannot return to society.
But there is only one true buddha. It's the buddha who can return.

Tempted to neg OP. He fell into the self improvement "enlightenment" trap. You aren't better than anybody bro. But all that mental masturbation has convinced you that you are on "another level". They got you.
I say this from experience because I fell for the same crap about 10 years ago. A buddy and I would sit around reading self help books and watching seminars all day when we were flat broke. Posting cringe worthy motivational posts on social media because we thought we figured out life and knew some secret that nobody else did. And you know what we accomplished in the end from this?: Zilch. Probably lost some friends though.
At the end of the day, we're all just frking animals. Chitting, pissing, eating, having sex and just trying to find our happy place under the sun. Remember this before you are so quick to judge others.

What do you think will improve your life more, sitting in silence for hours a day or learning a hirable skill that will get you out of your shared living situation and town that you've been whining about for years?

Yes you are, you absolutely think you're better and so much more enlightened than everyone else, and look down on people with...cars?I’m kinda venting but I’m to the point I just can’t deal with people who aren’t “on my level”. I really have to change my environment or only hang with those with my shared interests.
Have you considered changing yourself? Because fuking off to Japan will absolutely not help this self-inflicted ailment of yours. Good luck.Train hard, train smart, have fun!

You're attributing your inability to connect with people to some meditation sessions and a little bit of self-reflection - that's wishful thinking. Chances are you weren't any better at establishing relationships prior to your self improvement pursuit and you need to work on your social skills - plain & simple. Developing an attitude that everyone around is too basic & superficial is a response to being lonely and lacking validation, rather than a sign of achieving some profound thinking lmao
