There were no regulatory safety bodies in victorian era. Chit like aspestos and lead paints, radium in make up etc. My Dad's in his 70s and the smog used to be so bad that if you drew breath through a cloth, it turned black. They had it just as rough. Booze in Europe has always been readily available too. Guy just has those 'what the fukc is he' looks.
