Without even reading the other comments, I can guess they've already explained the history of the engagement/wedding ring scam. You need to focus on another aspect: Your gf was tasked with making a purchase, and she chose an obscenely high price for something thathas no intrinsic value. That's a giant red flag that I pray you don't ignore.
Back in the 1920s or so, when engagement rings first came into fashion, the salesmen at madison avenue had to work overtime to put forward the idea that it was the man who was supposed to go out and choose it - specifically because almost without exception, if a woman picked out a ring it would always be an inexpensive one, preferring to spend their future family's money on more practical matters. Obviously the times have changed, and women have changed. At least yours has.
Here's some advice buddy: When selecting a wife, look to the Good Book. You know what adjective shows up time and again regarding ideal wives? "Industrious" A wife is meant to contribute to the bounty of the family's coffers, either by also making money or by saving it via assorted means (gardening, clothes stitching, etc). You unknowingly presented a challenge to your future spouse - to demonstrate industriousness and future-oriented spending......and she came back with an $18k price tag.
Every excuse that you're now cycling through in your brain ("lol she's cool"), in your internal monologue are all just that - emotion-based excuses, and they are devoid of actual logic. 15 years from now you will be living a wretched life alone in a studio apartment if you marry this woman. In the real world, this was a woman who told you that $18k is a reasonable and justifiable amount for a worthless decoration. Whether it was due to her naivety (as you seem to be putting forth) or not, IT SHOWS POOR JUDGEMENT REGARDING FINANCES. If you still marry this chick, you deserve every financial trouble that's guaranteed heading your way.
And fuk you for getting me all worked up about this. Now I gotta blast this anger out in the gym.

2k would be the absolute max I'd even think about.
18k.
Jesus Christ.
18k.

I would sit your gf down then offer her 2 options.
1. buy the ring for her for 18k
2. donate 18k in her name to save the children in Africa so they might have a chance in life, rather than being a slave from birth digging for useless stones
If she chooses 1 leave her.

Whatever you do leave her or she will destroy you financially.
Marriage is for poor people.

Dude I don’t care if you are a billionaire I would never spend over 2k on ANY jewelry, it always losses it’s value and the **** always gets lost or stolen.
It’s literally the worst financial decision you can ever make besides getting married of course.

Why would you brahs not want your wife to MOGG all her fat little friends? Life will only ever be about MOGGING.
What kind of message are you sending when you spend the money so that you can MOGG, but deny her the same life affirming experience?
