You never ever sign over full rights to your IP. Literally the most basic rule when you're an artist. Dude dropped the ball hard and its his own fault. He still had 10 million in the bank when he bounced and now he's getting huge checks from Netflix. He's not a man with a sob story who you should rush to defend.

i get he is trying to pull off a chess move here and get inbetween netflix and viacom and warn viacom he will try to sabatage any future contracts they make on his show unless they renegotiate his old contracts they currently have no obligation to do. Even if he pulls it off, it will be because he is in a unique position at the top to do so, i dont see how it will help any of the people at the bottom, if he wants to make a real change he will need to get into promotions and represent these people, be another Al Haymond type that every athlete/performer loves because he gets them the best deals.

That was his chance too, he could have renegotiated then. They wanted him bad enough for 50 million, he had the power then to renegotiate his rights to the show. Thats where I dont see the "original contract" as being so fuking horrible, dave is the one that walked away from 50 million.

Not really. Without Viacom then that is low budget and on Youtube. Viacom paid for everything. Took the risk for everything. Thus they own the product.

The issue here isnt that he signed a contract. Its more so what is legal within a contract itself and how this is explained. I agree with Dave on this one, no entity should own your creative rights on any project for eternity.

The best way to avoid that is by not signing a contract that says it will own your creative rights for eternity.
