I don't have many tips, but I dig your passion and attitude. The tidbits of info sprinkled here and there are a good idea, didn't know that about beaver being a part of Canadian history. You're in a neat position where you're doing something that is both fascinating and yet totally alien to 99.99% of our modern society. Gjdm, keep at it!

I make maps in a forestry context mostly. It was a minor part of my career so my knowledge is limited, but I'm actually taking a class now as part of my program, to sharpen my skills in it.

When I was a tech(translating terms from French so bear with me) I would make maps for planning purposes. They would illustrate different data, such as: different cutting blocks, areas separated by species/type of cut to be executed, location of different parcels and other forestry related information. It would also include the topography, different bodies of water, locations of Indian reservations, cottage houses, buffers around at risk species' habitats, different type of roads, urban infrastructure, beaver dams and at risk creeks, etc.

Now for fun, I make maps of the areas I go explore, I'll also grab the coordinates and put them in my gps so I can navigate easily, but I have a compass and know how to get around with a physical map. On the map, I put landmarks with esri/google earth so I can navigate in the field, lakes, rivers, I book mark cool stuff that I want to explore from satellite pictures, topography, etc.

I want to learn more about geographical data and start making maps for more urban areas, so I can expand my expertise in this. Ultimately, I want to launch a side gig, that would develop into something more, in GIS.

When I buy land I'll make a nice detailed map of it and print it out in large format to put in my work room.

These are some of the maps I've made, they're pretty basic, but I'm learning more advanced techniques and also developing my artistic touch.
