You obviously know nothing about Texas. It's very technologically advanced, it's a second silicon valley, very well developed and wealthy. People there are pretty intelligent.

This is an infrastructure issue, lack of preparedness for an issue they didn't expect (big snow is rare there) and a power management issue, it doesn't reflect on the state as a whole, that is unless you're an ignorant person and unfamiliar with the place. It's also a gigantic state, so naturally you'll have "middle of nowhere" small towns where you see small town stuff, but for the most part it's well populated, busy, tech hub.

It's not "Americans", it's simply humans who have adjusted to an advanced society and rely on technology. Most people in populated areas in first world countries would all face this same issue. People living in Paris aren't living off of their home grown potatoes and livestock.

However yeah, isn't that a crazy thought? Imagine some catastrophic event that knocked out power in the country for 2-3 months. It's not even remotely impossible.

Went to Wal-Mart today and can confirm no eggs/milk/bread/water. In Houston. Don't know why. The freezing weather past. It was supposed to be a minor freeze today but that's it. It's getting warm on the weekend. Everyone pretty much got power now. Just waiting on water pressure to be normal. On the plus side, I'm off tomorrow and the weekend.

My wife's cousins house is like this. They have three burst pipes. She told my wife that the streets in their city are literally running like rivers due to all the water gushing out of houses and businesses. They got their power back Wednesday night around 9, but no water since no plumbers are available. All over some single digits temps. This was my night Sunday from the same system.

JIT- just in time business philosophy. Space costs money, keep very limited stock and push it to the suppliers to keep stuff coming in exactly when needed (hence just in time). Started in manufacturing, Walmart has done it for the last many years, but not without pain as there has been supply chain issues plaguing walmart for a long time now.

This isn't a JIT problem. This is an emergency disaster preparation problem.

All of the pipes haven't been properly insulated to handle extreme temps. A pipe burst is a risk you cannot ignore. Insulation is very easy too.

Running out of stock because of a panic isn't cause for concern or leads to failure of a business.

As for food, it’s the norm. I hear so many people talk about being starving or so hungry they can’t stand it if they don’t eat something every 3 hrs - 4 hrs. It’s ridiculous. I can fast for 24 hrs without blinking.

If a house had pipes running through the attic and they experienced freezing temps, their entire house was royally fuked from the start. That would make me super nervous even without losing power. My family rented a house in Florida for a couple of months and my bro in law thought it was a bright idea to fix the toilet water shut off valve for some reason. Next thing you know the line busted and flooded the whole house. We didn't know the shut off was on the sidewalk and so flooding took a good 20 mins. It didn't ruin the house because it was on the bottom floor and we scooped up the water pretty quickly.

My biggest fear has always been water damage before any other type of damage. Secondly you are at the mercy of the city water line. If that thing goes, your entire house goes.
