So use a taser...

Backup was 10 seconds away, the homeless guy had a pipe.

Gun was not necessary

'for the 50th time, tasers aren't that effective especially when the dude is insane and high on drugs and actually many times make them even more aggressive.

You say it's not necessary, but you're wrong it was. Should the cop have found another crowbar to have a crowbar fight with him instead?

You're just delusional.

What is the suggestion that the police officer has both taser and gun? I believe they both should be shot with 2 hands. So if he only has his taser out... then what happens when it is ineffective? Either doesn't connect properly or the guy gets tased and doesn't care cause hes high on whatever and mentally ill. What then? The guy is a couple feet away don't have time to drop taser and switch to gun.

I do think taser can work in these situations but you have to have multiple officers, one officer uses a taser and another officer is standing by with a gun trained on the guy in case taser doesn't work and guy goes to attack one of them. I don't really see how you can use a taser in a dangerous situation like that when you're the only guy there.

Where was the second officer when that happened anyway? I don't think I can see him, is he in his car?

So try it? Why not try the taser first? Would one guy with a pipe really be an immediate threat to multiple police officers lives if there were 3 or 4 cops there? 3 cops can’t take down a dude with a pipe?

Backup was literally 10 seconds away. Nothing you say can convince me he had no other option
1. There is a shortage of LEOs in the USA due to low pay, leftist hate 24-7, the danger etc
2. Tasers are effective when they work. They dont always work. Watch the video

3. Comparing britain vs the USA is apples vs oranges. Though I do agree that things could be done more differently by cops, but also, people need to be better people. Not to mention, the leftist media need to shove their bull chit anti-cop agenda because people are sheep and only react according to how social and main stream media tell them to act
4. If "nothing we can say" will convince you other wise, then you are a lost cause and you dont belong in any type of discussion of this nature. Go on back to an antifa/BLM/CNN hive mind echo chamber where you can be surrounded by other people who have never been in a conflict before and make no qualms about judging police shootings with 20/20 hindsight from their computer after years of leftist anti-cop hate pushing your bias

where was back up? How do you know back up was 100% guaranteed if he needed/wanted/call for it? How do you know the guy wasnt going to rush him as he was radio'ng for back up forcing him to fire? The cop gave him plenty of chances to comply. Seems like he knew the stakes the entire time. If the guy gave the cop m ore distance then that would be the perfect time to radio for assistance which may not be what the perp wanted. Hence, why he kept advancing. Just speculation though

Do police have radio? Do they have a way of communicating?

The police officer stepped out his car at the 1:50 mark, backup arrived at 2:20. He couldn’t wait 30 seconds?

He has a radio, they can communicate their locations. Instead of stepping out of your vehicle to deal with an armed man who’s not cooperating, why not just wait for the backup to arrive when you know their close by?

If you know in about 30 seconds you’ll have backup, why go out and make it 1 on 1 instead of 5 on 1 or whatever? Dude was poorly trained to handle a situation, nothing you say will convince me otherwise

Dude didn't act perfectly but also wasn't poorly trained to handle this situation, as he gave the guy literally dozens of chances to comply, and at some point it's not worth the risk.

"Nothing you can say will convince me otherwise". Yeah that's the problem. Let me guess... you've never been in a situation like this before, and have absolutely 0 training in this type of situation? Yet, somehow you know what's best and are able to judge this cop's actions who has 1,000+ hours of training for this type of situation and has probably been in hundreds of situations like this that ended peacefully before.

but you know what's best.

this was standard procedure in the 90s

he wasnt exactly charging him, i guess he could continue backing up, but they got other calls to get to, is he just supposed to get chased in a circle all day around the building by this guy? he told him drop it plenty of times, he told him he would shoot him. Waste his ass and move on to the next call.

yeah he is walking backwards, cant see what is behind him and an armed crazy person is closing the distance. He could easily trip and fall and now the crazy guy is beating his head in with a pipe. People are so fuking stupid, how many blows to the head are you going to take for a 50k a year job. fuk that noise he warned him and he was being threatened so he shot him like he told him he would. All those people talking crap about about oh he should just do a judo throw on him, oh he should use pepper spray and wrestle with him, he should switch to his tazer while the guy is 10 feet away and could rush him ect should go do that job then and take a few wackings with a steel pipe to save some homeless bum who is just going to get released and back out on the street doing the same chit all over again

The real question is, how many times would you get hit with that pipe to save that homeless bum? I would take 0. there is a lot of saviors around here though apparently

Watch the video bud. At the moment the cop stepped out of his car what was the homeless guy smashing? Nothing.

Even if he’s smashing cars...ok? What’s more important, people’s cars or the police officers safety? Why put yourself in that situation when it’s safer for you to wait 30 seconds? To save someone’s car?

Risk a lot to save a lot, risk a little to save a little

Guy clearly had fair warning and the cop shooting was within reason however that cop had a ton of time to line up a shot that had a better chance at not killing him and lol at the rapid fire of 7 shots very blatantly excessive, strange case where I feel the shooting was justified but clearly the officer did not need to unload 7 shots, personally would not have batted an eye at 2 maybe even 3 shots fired.

For the record very pro cops and huge Tatum fan but this one clearly could have been handled better.

You're getting responses that aren't real arguments because you're not saying anything worth while, just saying "you're wrong and there's nothing you can say that will convince me otherwise" so why should you get anything other than an empty response, citing your lack of experience in matters like these?

But because it's late. The cop waits for backup before talking to this guy who he obviously has talked to before - he's then in trouble because he let property get destroyed. You want to get rid of qualified immunity? Then this cop would be liable for all the damage done because he was waiting for backup.

The cop then lets him walk away and even says "He's walking away, I'm not in pursuit, waiting for backup before we take him into custody". Also mentions he's "11-5" short for 11550 which means under the influence of craze. The second cop gets there and where the fuk did the first cop go? Time to take this guy into custody. Waiting for backup against a crazy high tweaker with a weapon? Yeah not going to be alone with him and a taser....

Gives him plenty of chances, says what he's going to do, backs up around 50ft it looks like until he's on a sidewalk with parking, which looks like it backs up to a wall. Guy continues to walk towards a police officer with his gun drawn, holding a pipe, when the cop is literally saying drop the pipe or I will shoot you... these things can and do turn south in a split second, you don't know if you have 30 seconds to wait. He made a decision. At any second, the guy could have charged at him and hit him over the head, forever changing and possibly ending his life, and there is absolutely 0 guarantee the officer could have stopped the threat before that happened.

No, would not be held liable for waiting for backup.

Exactly, these things can turn south in a second. So why not go to the situation with your backup? I just don’t understand it. Nobody was in immediate danger, backup is 30 seconds away...just wait.

Exactly, these things can turn south in a second. So why not go to the situation with your backup? I just don’t understand it. Nobody was in immediate danger, backup is 30 seconds away...just wait.
I said without qualified immunity, which is something people want to get rid of in the whole defund the police movement.

So should police always wait for backup because things can go south? So now 2 = 1 so lets double the police force to handle the same amount of calls. Right?

You generally assume, when you point a gun at someone and tell them to stop, they will stop. That's a fair assumption. You're right, walking around with a pipe isn't the end of the world and alone doesn't warrant a ton of cops and deadly force, yet, when you continue to walk towards an officer with a gun pointed at you raising the pipe like you're going to swing it and back the officer up literally against a wall, you're taking away their options.

You can second guess the cops all you want, and it's fair and normal. Pretty much every situation the police get into that turns south could be handled better in hindsight, that's just the way it is when situations go south. Same thing with football or any sport play - if a play goes south, there will always be second guessing - even if you've ran that same play 100000 time with a 100% success rate and it was the best call, or a good call, if it goes south people will second guess you and say you were wrong.

Gotta realize cops are humans and will make mistakes. That being said, I really don't think any mistakes were made here. It could have been handled better, but it wasn't handled wrong. Waiting for backup is a judgement call in the moment and neither you or I have all the information the cop did at the time - where backup was, who was his backup, additional radio traffic, this guy's history, etc. Cop made a judgement call that has probably worked 1000 times in the past and this time it didn't, it happens. Regardless, this is another situation where the suspect just needed to listen to the police and he would be fine.

If he hadn't shot him that guy could have gone on to be a real asset to society, roaming the bins all day with weapons and gargling like a fuking zombie. This clown world needs to be cleaned up

Yes the police should always use backup in dangerous situations. Always.

I was a firefighter/EMT for a while. Something they always drilled in our heads every single day was that no firefighter does anything alone. In the academy we couldn’t even go to the bathrooms by ourselves because that’s how badly they wanted to drill that mentality into our heads.

If I put myself in any dangerous risk by myself like that cop did I would get SCOLDED and possibly written up and face termination. Srs.

I just don’t understand the mentality. Backup was 30 seconds away. Why freelance? Why put yourself in more danger than you need to be? You could get yourself killed or another cop killed by making the situation worse. Makes no sense to me.

You're just not facing the reality of the situation. Yes, in the police academy as well you do that same type of chit. But when you have 3 dudes covering 20 miles of city and there's plenty of priority 1-2 calls holding... yeah that's just not real life. What you're proposing is exactly what the deputy did in Florida during the school shooting, stand by and wait for backup in a potentially dangerous situation. This wasn't even that. Also, you being a firefighter/emt is kinda irrelevant, because despite being on the same team, the job is completely different. Cops generally don't want to do things by themselves, but the reality is sometimes they will have to and that's why they carry 20lbs of chit with them everywhere they go.

The officer that shoots pulls up on him when he's still a ways away from the vehicle, probably to try and talk to him would be my educated, professional guess. You want to keep officers close by in case this guy who has had multiple people call on him, and has already been contacted by the police, turns violent. Watching him from a far and waiting means he could go out and damage more vehicle "omg why are the officers just sitting there when this guy is smashing cars right in front of him?!" or worse this guy attacks another person and "omg why didn't the officers do anything? we called multiple times and the officers knew this guy was high!". These are all realistic considerations.

You said, risk a little to save a little. This was that - a little risk, to save a little. Its just so happens the little risk didn't pan out.
