The reality is gay military would crush Iranian or North Korean soldiers. Whilst North Koreans, if they somehow got past the DMZ, would surrender upon seeing the first McDonalds.
It matters because of how close many of the major wars of the past have been. We almost lost WWII. We lost Vietnam. We barely won the Korean War and N Korea is still a threat.

It also matters because ideologies and morals can differ more dramatically and it’s very possible they won’t be fighting for the same principles, causing divisiveness among troops. There is only one agenda; defense of the US. The very fact that they created their identity through their sexual preferences, they are already weakened because their eye isn’t on the ball from the start.

Vietnam wasn't lost. The North signed a treaty promising they would cut off insurrectionists, only to break it once the U.S. was down to their last men and invaded with a conventional army whilst the South Vietnamese army was geared towards anti-insurgency. Just like modern Afghan army on paper seems to be good at anti-insurrection but if Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan invaded them today they would lose. You can't flip a switch between anti-insurgency and conventional warfare overnight.

It's interesting you mentioned that because T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was captured by the Turks during WW1 and was supposedly raped/sodomized. He survived the ordeal and the war but the experience left him mentally and emotionally broke.

Also in all fairness to homosexuals serving in wartime, the ancient Greeks were known to be very proud homosexuals (in fact they believed that true love was only possible between men). The Spartans had a tradition where a teacher and student would be together (emotionally and sexually) and fight and die with each other by the side.
