My grandma is from Georgia so I only had her grits growing up, she just put either butter and hot sauce or butter and sugar in them. I thought they were gross.

As an adult, I fuking love good quality restaurant grits. Well seasoned, Jalapeno-cheddar and whatnot. Never tried to make them myself though.

I actually had a good friend from Michigan when I lived in Alabama. He had an interest in Southern culture like the novels, accents, and history.

Things like grits, greens, cracklins, and hush puppies became popular because they were inexpensive. People just made do with what they had. Tea is also really sweet in the Deep South because it was once used to make booze punch before prohibition. I can see how someone else can find it nasty, but personally they are really comforting.

Personally, I think oysters are nasty af, like slurping a giant booger. I'm also not into slurping crawdads with all their little legs n chit, but some people love em. Love grits and sweet tea though and I will throw down on sight for such lurid accusations.
