Jus for your comparison, here are some values from The Netherlands

Dutch median income is 36k.
Average home is selling for 400k
University tuition is less than 3k a year.
Vacations (usually 5 to 8 weeks a year) can be done in rented apartments for less than 100 a night, or some people go camping.
Cycling to work/school, and at least one car worth 10-20k (used VW golf).

Even 700k isn't buying you anything nice, just not a dump
700 in my area is going to buy you 3000 square feet, probably early to mid 00s with an ok yard, or something smaller that's newer with no yard

Prices drop off as you get into more vibrant neighborhoods but generally 700 is about the least I'd want to spend. Custom building a 4000 square foot brand new home is running at about 1.2 mil here

It's annoying because even in 2019, 750 bought you a really nice custom home.

Tbf I pay a premium because I live 10 mins from my work/downtown, I wasn't going to be fooled by vague promises of WFH without guaranteed contracts because boomer execs HATE wfh and want people back in the office asap
