He comes off as a little bit NPC. Easily frightened and angered that there is a commonly used term that describes his actions and his thought process that he genuinely thought were unique to him. It's the ego reacting to him realizing he is not as smart, or clever, he believes himself to be and that people easily recognize it. A simpleton or midwit might be an appropriate term he is coming to terms with.

Not only that, but no one is mentioning that the May withdrawal was also set in place because April begins their fighting season. Once winter is over they can move freely and attack, during winter the fighting nearly stops because the weather is so bad.
