Here is a reduced example that showcases the problematic nature of mean in this case:


Imagine a country consisting of 3 people with incomes of 100K USD, 100K USD and 1m USD. Mean is 400K USD which tells a far different picture than reality in terms of distribution.

The median of that same set would be 100K USD. This gives a much better perspective given that you are twice as likely to have an income of 100K USD than 1M in my (admittedly oversimplistic) scenario.
