Whoa now, I was born in 1980 - my parents are boomers, not me. He has a child account connected to mine, so I have full control over what apps he can access. He turns his phone in to us every night. My wife and I could go through it at any time. He really is a good kid though, and has only rarely given me a reason not to trust him. I really think by the time a kid is 15 you've pretty much taught them all the values you're going to teach them (probably by 12). Thereafter, you're just helping them execute. The training wheels have to come off at some point.

Respect for making him earn it. We bought new for phones for my wife and me last fall, and gave him a hand-me-down. It was a 3 or 4 year old phone that was barely mid-range to begin with, so not much resale value. I waffled on making him pay for the add-on plan for his phone, but in the end it wasn't much so I just ate the cost. He could actually afford it; he comes in and cleans the office I work at weekly and has done really well budgeting and saving money. I suppose that's part of why it doesn't bother me to spend a bit on him.
