If you look at how laws were established POWs are supposed to be entitled to their pay, cigarette rations, and other amenities to encourage surrender because hey in that case being a pow ain’t bad.

I'm not rooting for either side or emotionally invested in this fight. But I find it shocking the Ukrainians aren't handling the POW's differently.
Like your cities are getting bombed. Your family members/friends are being killed. These people came to your country, to your city to do you harm. And you leave them their eyes and the opportunity to somehow get free/fight you again in the future? You leave them their balls so they can breed children which may invade your country again in the future?

Invaders and surrendering are two different statuses. You can't execute someone just for having had a military status. Once you surrender, you give up, you are a non combatant, and it becomes the same as killing a civilian.
There are rules within war. Whoever breaks the most rules and the magnitude of the rules are the bad guys. Hence - the US became the new Axis when it dropped the nuke on civilians. Hence, Ukaraine are the bad guys because they kill their own citizens, stage false flags, and kill pows.

I honestly don't give an f about any Russian soldier there-they went there to kill, rape & maim-so they deserve what is coming to them. What gets my goat is the Western governments & media whining about the Geneva Convention when it is Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq etc doing this kind of stuff, but endorse it when it is Saint Zelensky doing it or their own troops doing it to people when they invade-such as Abu Ghraib & executing people in various ways.
