I let my employees work from home briefly and never will again. Been there, done that, lesson learned.

Our generation has become so damn lazy they don't even want to leave the house.

Yep. I think the ideal balance is probably 3-4 in the office and then a 1-2 to home.

Even that is a blessing. So much information is shared just by bsing in the office.

I love working remotely. I travel to a different country every month or so and work from random places. Last week the missus and I drove to a different city and spent a few days in a beach resort. All while getting my work done. It may not be for everyone, but I sure as hell like it.

Why would anyone want to return to work after working from home for the same pay? Obviously because it's easier and less "work". Completely understandable. Likewise, it's also reasonable companies would want people to return to work because they're more productive. It's like the difference between online courses and in person courses. We all know there's a difference and pros/cons to each.

In California it was damn near impossible to get teachers back in the classroom. Some still only teach remote making the same amount and getting their yearly raises.

I'm just as productive from home, the difference is I don't have to commute two hours a day. The company gains because if I need to get something over the line, I can log on Saturday morning and just get it done and then go about my weekend. Pre-covid it was "impossible" to work from home because of "security reasons", now miraculously it's situation normal. I'm doing 3 days WHM / 2 days in the office and I don't think it will ever go back to full time.

The whole argument of "I am more productive at home" is just nonsense. Most people are still in the honeymoon phase of this work-from-home world and love the idea of waking up at 7:59am to clock in for 8:00am in their PJ's. Eventually this honeymoon phase will end and productivity will eventually plummet if it hasn't already. At least in the office management can oversee what everyone's doing and time is accounted for.

This is what big corps fear/anticipate.

Im going to say from personal experience that in some job fields there are advantages to people being in the office rather than from home. Some jobs it really doesn't matter.

So funny how the same group that was saying your company can make healthcare choices for you and force a vaccine on someone now say that coming into work is asking too much. They have done polls that found a majority of people support vaccine mandates, close to 90% of democrats support them. Tech is 90% democrats. They voted that your corporation owns you. So go back to work, you can wear your PRIDE crocks.

Then fire them and hire someone else who is “more hungry”. If the above is really the mindset of an employee, they should be easily replaceable, correct?

idk i'm in NYS in a moderate area and majority of tech people are conservative but live out past the suburbs and don't want to return to 2-3hrs of commuting and paying for an XXL parking spot for their trucks.

i'm sure there are conservatives in apple but they hide it because they know better.

except what happens when you have a mass exodus of employees?
this pandemic opened up a whole new employee pool for companies.

I now have 3 friends who quit their local jobs to work remotely for other companies in different states and they are getting paid more.
there are so many work from home only jobs out there it's crazy.

if you need people who aren't potato's to do the busy work in the company then you are going to have a slog and a half replacing people who quit.

a lot of my friends are managers and people they hire are quitting before they even show up for the first day.
companies do not have the upper hand here.
not by a long shot.

i'm not sure either but my point is just because someone is a conservative doesn't mean they grow up to be tradies.

This.

What I have found is that the kinds of people you want to hire are usually employed and their employers take care of them so they really aren't looking and it's hard to make them leave and come work for you. Just like how the kinds of companies you want to work for are seldom ever hiring because nobody is leaving. The kinds of people who are always looking for a job, if you hire them, you'll find out why, just like if you go to a company that is always desperately hiring, you'll find out why the people before you quit.

The corporatist bootlickers ITT are completely out of touch with reality. The marketplace dictates IT jobs that don't require constant physical office presence are now partially or wholly work from home. Covid brought 2 decades of change in 2 years. It's not going to go back to the way it was. Employers that insist on 100% office attendance where it's not needed in order to do the job are not competitive in the market.

Pretty much. I can't really do my job any more effectively from the office. Remote working culture has also allowed me to hire people in team from 11 different countries. I'm a lot happier wandering and doing my job from different places. That's a big deal to me because i put in long hours.

Its interesting and funny at the stupidity of these big companies talking about climate change yet forcing their employees to drive to work and from work every day when they job could easily be done from home.

100% agree but hiring someone takes time and effort so it's up to the company to decide on what's best for them and if it's worth the time. Time = money.

Eventually the company you work for will make the rules and will find a suitable replacement for their needs. It's not up to some idiots on reddit to make that decision for them... and if we're talking about the big boys like Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc, who's intellectual property is worth top dollar, then ya.. their employees won't be working from home on a consistent basis. It's already hard enough to control leaks right now, imagine if everyone had access to these things from home where a peak over the shoulder could show the world what the next 3 iPhone's are gonna look like?

At the end of the day the whole work from home thing has no affect on me as I don't work a job where I can work from home. I'm only here for the discussion and I'm happy to engage in one. If people wanna have a discussion then I'm all for it, but seems like too many people are getting emotional in here "BUT I DON'T WANT TO COMMUTE 4 HOURS A DAY!!!!!" -- as if that's the companies problem. You signed up for the job and knew what the rules were. The world has raised a bunch of spoiled little ****s who think their life/opinion is on top of the totem pole, when in fact, it's at the very bottom.

Also shoutout to GainzMcgee for the neg for being an emotional ******* who can't have a discussion without getting upset LMAO.

This is really a leftist communist idea where the workers control the means of production. I hope Apple says "April 11th be at work 8am sharp" and anyone who doesn't show gets counted as a no-show. After 3x they fire them for job abandonment. Amazon needs order pickers, but you'll have to come in. Maybe do door dash for no tips. Uber for those who do actually go to work. G4P and OF. There are options.

It cost the company more money to have everyone come in. Everything from power usage to insurance so there must be a reason.

There's a good reason why everyone defending the workers are leftists/left wing. Hire commies, expect them to pull this kinda chit.

lol at the majority tradie misc weighing in on highly skilled labor.

Boyos, jump in your $50k, 7-year loan trucks, hit up the local mart for your monsters, skoal, and smokes, visit the worksite porta potty for your sad am dump, and hit the job site no matter the weather to swing your hammers or dig some holes.

We highly skilled, highly paid salarymen will handle our own business.
Early AM workout crew.
Holy crap dude, Satan's huge crew.
