If you meet someone at a McJob [entry level, low pay, temporary] then there isn't as much of a risk. And, at least in the before times, meeting/dating someone who you didn't work with directly [different department, maybe even a different floor or building] was low risk too.
Now Brad dating three different women that worked side by side? lol

I don't really care what the data says, I think that it's possible to meet people through a variety of media - if you are intuitive enough and know how to work with nature, you can meet friends and partner anywhere.TFW you lived during peak "met at work".

If I'm writing a novel maybe I would somehow run into the guy that I met on vacation in CA when I was around 12 and somehow we would both be single and live near each other and just happen to meet up randomly and "remember when".
I don't want a job. Or at least not the usual sort. Feel like I've done enough of that and in a few years I will have met my obligations- married, had a kid, parents deceased, kid grown up [almost, she's 16 now].
So really seems like time to do whatever the hell I feel like doing until I can't do anything much anymore.

Ironically, women who aren't into online dating also end up having it be a pita for them. Because while online dating heavily favors women and has become so commonplace, most guys are aware that a lot of women simply don't want to be approached much IRL at all these days. Thus, women who aren't into online dating end up actually getting their options significantly reduced, as so many guys won't approach women IRL anymore/only approach minimally. Which is because guys don't want to be labeled as creepy and/or autistic just for even bothering approaching IRL on top of the already high odds of rejection.

I guess I can add my data point, too.
Met my wife in 2002 while attending college. We met at a church activity, my friends knew her first. So, I guess kind of a college/church/friends combo.

I don't like online dating because
1. I don't know if the person who made the profile is the same person in the picture.
2. I don't want to advertise myself and what I want to people I'm not interested in.
I'd rather show specialized profiles to people whose pictures have been verified.

Met my wife in 1995 in a big "friends of friends" group that met at a bar that had an "all you can eat and drink" happy hour buffet, so I guess we could be considered "through friends" or "at a bar" depending on how you look at it.

A lot of it will be online now because cold approach in person is a minefield that can get you "shamed" all over the net.
So many things are socially taboo, especially with young people, that the conversation I had when I met my wife simply would not happen on a college campus these days.

I can chat up near strangers IRL if I make the effort, but it's not so easy. Feels like there are too many landmines to avoid.
ETA:
misc katya = | = irl katya
Same person, still think about all sorts of stuff, but I at most gently nudge topics to see how the person responds. I'm not like - WHAMMO - killer vax, Great Reset, geopolitics, finance, etc. etc.
Neighbor today-
So I don't know if you follow economics stuff...
"Oh yeah, I was just watching a guy talking about the stock market you know? Says you should just leave your investments alone and don't pay any attention- markets go up and down...blah blah blah"
[inside thoughts: yeah, but neighbor you are over 60 and retired...]
Right, I dunno though, seems like it could be pretty bad with this crazy inflation...

And the increase in defensive self-censorship due to social media is a topic I've come across a few times now- not just related to dating.

I've read [and seen] that fewer teenagers have jobs than previously. When I was in high school it was fairly unusual to NOT have a part time job of some sort, at least in the summer.
Teen labor force participation has been on a long-term downward trend. Since reaching a peak of 57.9 percent in 1979, the rate fell to 52.0 percent in 2000, just prior to the 2001 recession. The rate then dropped rapidly during and after the 2007–09 recession to reach 34.1 percent in 2011, and since then, it has stayed within a narrow range. The latest projection of labor force participation from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) points toward an even lower teen participation rate by 2024.
I specifically noticed during the Great Recession that suddenly there were grown up people working at places like Target and Kroger instead of teenagers.INTP Crew

That's because less young people go to church. Families are splintered. And the majority of people are borderline autistic when it comes to approaching/meeting new people.
Men are afraid of confrontation and rejection. They'll swipe right on 1000 girls and send hundreds of messages as openers with 0 fear of rejection. But how many guys just approach/chat up 2 or 3 girls per day IRL? How many guys goes out and approaches/talks to 10 girls in a single day with the goal of getting dates?
Obviously apps are more efficient at messaging/meeting a lot of girls in a short amount of time. But in 2022 a lot of guys are just handicapped by the digital world.
Girls get hundreds of messages from socially retarded guys. Most of them just want a quick hookup. Most girls don't.
Cold approach IRL is the easiest and most effective way to get girls. Simply because the majority of men are socially retarded now. Who's going to stand-out/ be remembered more? The good looking charming guy that approaches her in public or one of the THOUSANDS of guys that swipes on her/DM's her all the time.

She was standing alone in a corrider of the physics building and I walked up to her
Me: are you lost?
Her: no, I'm waiting for a friend. Why, do I look lost?
Me: no, but if you'd been in this building before I would have remembered.
Her: why is that?
Me: two reasons. First you're beautiful and second, out of the 400 or so people in this building at the moment, you might be the only one who's black.
Her: I know. Civil engineering has a few black students and staff, but physics isn't just white, it's pale.
Me: that's because we're all ugly and have zero social skills, so they don't let us outside during daylight.
Her:you'renot ugly and your social skills seem fine to me.
Me: shhhh, don't tell anybody or they'll take away my geek card.
Her: well we can't have that now can we.
Me: who's your friend that you're waiting for
Her: xyz, you know her?
Me: to say hello to, but that's about it.
Her: so she can't give me any dirt on you then?
Me: no, if you want the dirt on me, you will have to meet me in the pub tonight.
Her: I'm not meeting you in the pub
Me: yes you are, I'll be there at 8
I got to the pub at quarter to 8 and she walked in at 5 to.
That conversation is not taking place on a college campus in 2022. No chance in hell.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!
The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.
They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......
