That's a pretty chit way to do it but can't fault the guy for not wanting to be tied to a kid not his for 18 years. Fortunately the boy is only 5, he won't remember much. I barely remember anything at 5.

Agree that the mother holds primary blame for this, but sometimes crappy things happy to people through no fault of their own. Just because something crappy happens to you doesn't mean you should pass the crap on to those even less fortunate. This man could have behaved in a kind and responsible way without becoming a doormat, but he chose to pass the crap to the less fortunate.
