It sounded like my shirt tearing when I tore my pec too. I had 335 on the bench. I was in like my 3rd or 4th set of five when it happened. Buddy spotting me said it sounded like my shirt ripped and he had on headphones. I went to the doctor. He said surgery probably wouldn’t fix it. He was a regular doc though and not a specialist.
Ended up going to the gym again after that and just running. Strangely enough it never really hurt. It just felt weird. I’d have to grab my arm with my good arm and roll it over my body to get out if the bed.
You’ll have the blood work its way down your arm to your elbow and it will change colors. It’s pretty gnarly. It’ll never be the same though. I’ve made it back to working out with 315 twice since then I think it was. That was 2013. I hit 295 about two months ago and I felt it, but this time it was my left pec. I probably won’t get above 245 or so from here on out just to be safe.

Damn brah that sucks. Hopefully it's just muscular and not the tendon.
Tore my quad in highshcool and didn't even know it until a year later. I couldn't pass a ball without intense pain, but had zero issues running or sprinting. Just played left footed lol. Next year I complained about a knot in my quad and the athletic trainer points and says holy **** you tore your quad?
Still rolled up until this day. Thankfully it was only muscular and even though it's a bit fukked up, it never held me back from anything nor gives me any pain at all.

I Only use dumbbells and machines and cables for chest, pec tears seem to really only happen on heavy bb benching
I'm in my 30s and dont care about weight anymore, just want a decently strong and aesthetic looking chest, would take a smaller and weaker chest than risk a fukkin pec tear

Im still figuring out if I want to push for a surgery to get it reattached and get back to as close to 100% as I can, or if I say fuk it and just let it heal on its own and obviously never ever get close to lifting as heavy in my life.
Tough scenario, need to find me a good surgeon that knows wtf he’s doing.
One thing I’m sure of tho, I’m not doing even a push-up in what’s left of 2022. I’m out for the season.

Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Sorry to hear that brah… I’ve been very fortunate to have been training 17 years now injury free (maybe up to now), but two months ago I swear I thought I tore my pec actually. Maybe I did and it healed, I don’t know? I was doing bench and it was literally just a warm up set. On the negative, I felt the most unsettling feeling in my chest a sudden snap maybe. Could have just been a strain, but I’ve been training a while now and it was enough to disturb me…. I immediately just stopped my workout and and took two weeks off from doing chest. Not sure if I even tore it or not, I feel like It would have been more painful and hindering. Maybe a small micro tear? But that feeling was very unsettling.
Then when I got back to hitting chest again I just would do push-ups, cable flyes, cable chest press basically for a few weeks. Two days ago I did some DB incline without a problem. At the moment I can’t see myself touching barbell press for chest again, I am traumatized lol. I’ve always preferred DB’s anyway.

How old are you?
I think if you are late 30s or 40+ you might want to go a bit lighter being that you're physically starting to decline similar to most athletes when they reach that age.

Did you get an MRI or only ultrasound? There’s a huge intrauser reliability issue with Ultrasound, highly recommend getting an MRI if you haven’t yet.
Partial pec tendon tear in a 31 y/o who lifts is essentially a surgery almost every single time, if they were to ever have any chance of getting back to where they were. See a sports fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon ASAP. Alternative is a near certain chronic deformity, and an atrophic pec major compared to the contralateral side.

If so. Would you ever be open to doing a few weeks training under someone who could teach you to repair the pec no matter how it tore (MT junction vs tendon from the bone) , And even if it’s years old

tore my left pec, roughly 40% partial tear muscle from tendon in 2020. Its brutal, will never be able to bench heavy again. Impacts me on other lifts as well and aches/hurts at off times.
If you tore the tendon from bone, its repairable but you are on the clock as the surgery is only an option for a short time before the muscle starts to pull back. Surgery should be within 2 weeks but that is usually a clean break so not likely relevant here.
If its muscle from tendon you are potentially going to be out of luck. The only thing they can do is wrap your muscle and tendon in deadmans tendon and try to sew them together. Pretty sure Layne Norton had that type of tear and the surgery with good results but when I did mine they said it would be like sewing hamburger together and the recovery was too much for me to bear. They said I would be able to get most of my strength back but that is bull****. Went from repping 365 for 8 w/no spotter to repping 185 almost 2 years later and very sheepish about it. Deformity is obvious but meh, don't care about that.
You should have already been to a physical therpaist to get treatment if there is a chance you won't get surgery because they can blade it out which helps with recovery somewhat.

Sorry to hear brah. That's no fun. I know your pain.
Tore my pec on 300, ego lifting. I had been doing muay thai as well, training tons so my muscle strength was progressing quickly but tendons needed more time. Same thing, sounded like ripping a t shirt in half.
Mine tore fully from tendon bone connection, I guess lucky in a sense. No question surgery was needed for anyone who was athletic. Great surgeon, surgery was cake,i didn't have too much pain.
If you go this route, I'll be honest. Initial healing and getting back to it is gonna suck. I hated being laid up, arm immobilized and pretty much useless. Good thing is when PT start its exciting to see progress coming. And if you are healthy and heal well, you will be feeling your strength coming back pretty quickly.
I was super dillegent about PT. so much of it was just to help the shoulder get back to functioning correctly from being frozen in a sling. People who don't commit to their PT will have trouble with their shoulder later since it isn't rehabbed correctly.
First 6 weeks in a sling, one handed sucked. I couldn't do anything except search forums for people's stories about pec tears, like that one miscer Layne Norton? The guy who scanned all that milk at the grocery store.
Anyways, I can't comment on the non surgery route. But for my surgery, when PT started at around 6 weeks, things finally started progressing faster. Can't quite remember but about 6 to 8 months I probably fully strengthen my shoulder, the actual pec muscle was easy. Just have to be smart and let the connection heal. I'd say at about 11 months though I fully got my confidence back to bench press for close to my old reps and go heavy, as well as throwing full force punches in muay thai. I'm sure I could have been back faster but my PT guy wanted me to be patient so I listened. Plus lots of hot therapist aids in PT. That part was fun.
For athletics, it was a tough year in regards to my upper body. But that was about 6 years ago and I'm glad I took my time and did it right because it gives me no issues now. 98% healed but I can feel the connection a little when I flex sometimes. It's actually my stronger side.
Good luck brah. Lots of athletes have got these so it's not game over by any means. You'll be back at it. This one takes a long time to heal because of the shoulder involved. But there are way worse injuries that give problems later on. You're good

The prospect of tearing a muscle scares the **** out of me, dead srs. I'm not sure if it really helps, but I put extra time into stretching as best I can before any work, even odd muscles to stretch like pecs. Sorry this happened to you, op.

I tore my pec from the MT junction 4 years ago and got told the same hamburger meat story. And that they couldn’t fix it. In fact the team surgeon for a local NHL team was the one who said it. Did some research and found a doc who can fix any pec tear. See my post on either page 1 or 2. Dr. Stiebel out of west palm beach.

Only because doctors don’t know the proper way to fix it. And I’m only saying this so that others reading this in the future will find it to help them.

I had a gut feeling and didn't like that answer. Made an appointment with my primary doctor office the next day. It was a younger fit dude. Had my put my hands together like I was doing the hula dance. He looked at it and immediately said we've got about two weeks to get this repaired or it will roll up into itself and be that way forever. I was referred to an ortho and was under the knife in life 3 days.
Damn I'm glad I got a second opinion. Would have been ****ed forever

Anything within 1 year is still considered “fresh” for him. Anything after that he has to use a cadaver tendon to weave through the muscle and pull it back due to atrophy.
The guy is an absolute stud.
Again I only “disagree” with you so people see my post.
I was devastated when I was first told my tear was not fixable. So after searching a ton of forums I came across this doctor. I want to make it know so others can find these posts just as I did. (Especially since the 80 page thread I found on the topic has since been deleted) Hopefully it helps someone

But when I lift my arms up, to the side, or do the bench press motion, apparently it moves properly, or at least looks like everything it’s on it’s place
On the other hand I pretty clearly heard a shirt ripping off sound, plus felt like a tiger slashed my chest… so I don’t know.
I guess I’ll have to just see diff opinions. Saw an orthopedic surgeon today that initially told me I probably wouldn’t need surgery, but he still wanted to see an mri. Also taking those mri results to a diff doctor.
Hopefully i can make it work somehow

I guess my with my tear you could clearly see it wasn't normal or attached. My pec probably drooped a little but besides the bruising I didn't see any deformity.
