Europe literally has hundreds of years of head start on the US. In 200 years we'll probably have a public transportation system to move the poors around too. The wealthy will most likely travel in electric helicopters.

Many questionable layouts in American towns and cities were due to the rail system, bends were expensive and they kept everything as straight as possible.
