I find lifting and outdoor exercise only a temporary respite from depression. As soon as you stop and the rush wears off, the bad feelings creep back fairly quickly. I have always been in good shape, strong and physically fit during ALL my bouts of depression and anxiety. Mental illness doesn't care how good you look.
