Japan is still a nationalist hellscape. They still refuse to admit what they did to China. Fuk them. Srs. They should be grateful the Chinese don't bomb them back to the stone age. And I love Japan, but their govt is srsly fuked. The Japanese leaders should visit China and make a huge gesture of apology and reconciliation. It would go a long way.

Russia and Japan had a neutrality pact that both sides honored for the vast majority of the war (Russia did join with Britain and the US in '45 after Germany was defeated).

Japan got greedy and wanted to expand their empire. They thought if they hit the US hard and Americans were dying, the US populace wouldn't have the toughness for a war and would choose to give up influence in Asia versus dig in for a fight. Japan found out otherwise.

Little shout out to fellow miscer Tom Wanks. I've never been a history guy, or much of a non-fiction reader in general. At least with respect to my discretionary reading. I read plenty of trade journals for work.

Something like a year ago Tom mentioned his favorite (I think he said favorite, he like him anyway) historian was Victor Davis Hanson. My wife is always checking out books from the library for the kids, so I got on the online catalogue and looked to see what they had from him. They had a couple books, one was "The Second World Wars: How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won". My grandpa was in WWII and I'd always wanted to deepen my understanding of it a bit more. The book was checked out and took forever to get back in, but eventually I got it. I just finished it this last week. It doesn't go into detail on specific battles, instead it focuses on the overarching themes. Why leaders made the choices they did, what determined who won or lost, major mistakes, etc.

I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone interested in history and especially military history.

It's crazy to think of how many normal every day people the bomb killed. You didn't even have to have anything to do with the war, you could've even imposed it. Didn't matter, you're just a casuality in government eyes. Just think, you're going about your daily life wfh or at the office or walking to lunch and you see a mushroom cloud and loud defeaning explosion followed by blinding light.

What is really incredible is that the two atomic bombs only accounted for 3% of the bombing damage done to Japanese cities in WWII. In a 6 month incendiary bombing campaign of major Japanese cities earlier in 1945, twice as many Japanese civilians were killed than Japanese military deaths for the entire war!

Some would say that Germany is still one of the greatest countries on earth - seeing a 'Made in Germany' sticker brings some joy to my eyes as do 'Made in Japan'... you know that when something is made in these two countries it's seriously good quality.

Go look at the German's country and their engineering, food, culture, etc - they are a superior people and I am not even German, although I am European.

Einstein? lol dude.

Japan is quite European, even their royals dress like Brits. The Dutch taught them manners, Portuguese gave them weapons. Europeans had a great influence on Japan. Also, on living standards. With Japanese work/suicide culture, it cannot touch the northern European countries even on their worst day.

If 2 atomic bombs were dropped back then, we should not be surprised (at least prepared) that 3 could be dropped in the current Russia-Ukraine war scenario, only that today's atomic bombs are more dangerous and would inflict more damage (adjusted with the world population though).

Depends on where they are targeted and where they fall.

A city or civilian population doesn't necessarily have to be the target (like the 2 atomic bombs before), an atomic bomb can target certain kinds of infrastructure or military bases of the enemy or even their nuclear possessions.
