I always thought True Romance was mediocre at best. Felt like it was written by a twelve year old. Christian Slater & Patricia Arquette were poor casting choices in my opinion. Never understood why so many folks liked it. Its ridiculous that True Romance has been mentioned several times in this thread, but Natural Born Killers hasn't even been mentioned once. VASTLY superior movie. And it's not even close.

The Scicilian scene in True Romance is one of the best scenes of all time.

I've seen Starship Troopers dozens and dozens of times. Pitch Perfect is #1 though, I may have passed 100 views on that one.

Did you see it when it first came out, or years after?

When it was first released, Slater was a superstar, playing positive characters. Here he is cast as a loser who works in a comic book store who can’t even pick up hags at a bar…he needs to pay for sex. The movie had no hype and was almost like an unknown indie film when released and they cast one of the top stars for it…very rare thing at the time, might be the first time.

The movie relied on heavy dialogue and pop culture references to carry the film, a Tarantino trademark that again did not exist to this degree before. The Sicilians scene is potentially the goat in this regard. The scene where Clarence confronts Drexel as well.

Coke deal standoff was awesome.

Drexel was awesome, Gary Oldman ****in killed it. Huge, super talented actor flying under the radar in this “indie-ish” film.

****in Floyd was a scene stealer. Mega star of all time flying under the radar in this indie-ish film.

Absolute legends Walken and Hopper face off with the greatest dialogue in any movie of any time. Again, in an unknown low budget film.

The scene where Alabama realizes she is fukked and decides to mess with Gandolfini is almost on par with the Walken/Hopper scene….and again may be the first time we are seeing (in Tarantino fashion) the strong female not just being a supporting role in an action/crime movie.

There was no movie prior that had this movie’s energy and style. If you saw this for the first time years and years after its release, it inspired countless other films that mimicked or even surpassed it, so you might not be able to recognize how groundbreaking and how much of an oddball it was at the time. That matters when judging why it is so beloved and referenced.

For reference, this unpromoted gem sat hiding amongst Jurassic Park, Cliffhanger, The Firm, The Fugitive, Sleepless in Seattle, Free Willy, Dazed and Confused, A Bronx Tale, Demolition Man, Carlitos Way, Schindlers List…TR basically fell from Mars when compared to the other releases of the year.

Oh, yeah. For some reason I've seen Draft Day about 20 times. I have no idea why.
