The problem with Jacob and Co is....their stuff is just way too out there. I've never seen a Jacob watch that I actually thought looked good srs. You get ugliness at a premium with Jacob

But if someone making 900k a year wants to buy a 20k jaeger lecoultre go ahead.
99% of people should not spend more than few k on a watch.
I make great money and bought a 1k used Omega seamaster from the 1960s in the diamond district in NYC. yeah I can use my phone to check time or buy a smart watch, but I think theres something to be said about checking time the old school way (srs).

So basically this is just two mindsets.
1. Guys who buy expensive watches for investments
2. Guys who only view watches as a time piece or fashion based item

[img]https://i.imgur.com/StEDQ49.png[img]
guess watches are garbage srs, if you're shopping for a budget watch get a casio, timex, or seiko.
you can buy generic quartz watches from alibaba for like $10. brands like guess just buy the same chinese garbage, put their name on it, and slap on a large markup.

Can any of you watchcels tell me what model this is? I'm digging the aesthetics.
looks like the orient day date – basically a discontinued model from orient that is a clone of the rolex day date ("presidential") except this is on an aftermarket strap.
since they're discontinued and pretty rare, i'm seeing listings for like $700 online, which is not worth it at all imo. orient is a solid brand in the $150-$300ish price range though, they make great watches for the price.

Watch collecting always struck me as a strange hobby even when wrist watches still had a lot more utility to them back in the 90's and prior.

But who was phone? I can't imagine going or being anywhere in 2023 where you can't immediately find out what time it is. If not simply ask someone or look up at the sky. Shts not hard. LOL at wasting thousands of $$ to do something people have done for thousands of years.

Cause some very expensive watches outsource their parts, while some inexpensive watches make all the parts in-shop
Maybe I haven't studied it enough, but I know there are also inexpensive watches that nail the time so ...
I can't really ascertain what makes a watch expensive.
Materials + brand recognition
Citizen, Seiko, Orient, and Grand Seiko are well known to be the most vertically integrated watchmakers in the world. This mean that every part of every one of their watches is made by the watchmaker and not by someone else.
Ironically, those can all be had cheapMeanwhile, a fukload of more expensive brands are all owned by the "Swatch" group
Longines is owned by swatch, for example

A watch will never tell time as accurately as a phone will.
It's more of a sentimental purchase.
One day you could hand your son your vintage watch and say "I remember wearing this watch the day I decided to not pull out and shoot a batch in your mother, you're welcome"
